Crunches make my abs cramp every time

I guess it's not a HUGE deal, it just means I have to skip them during classes etc, and there are other ways to work your abs, but I'm wondering if it's happening to anyone else? Basically every single time I do some crunches, my abs cramp up.
*fun* fact too, I got a stomach bug two weeks ago and they cramped up every time I threw up too. Talk about double suckage.
Wondering if there's any way to fix it? All I can see is staying hydrated (I drink 4-5 water bottles a day) and not have a huge meal beforehand (I don't).

I am by no means a fitness expert, but have you tried stretching your abs before and after? Such as the cobra pose?
I tend to have the opposite problem, my back cramps up during crunches. So now I do crossfit style sit ups instead.0
