How do you combat weed-related hunger (ie, the munchies)?

I smoke weed pretty much every night for my insomnia, and sometimes during the day if my migraine meds aren't kicking in fast enough. Like everyone else on the planet, it makes me intensely hungry, but it also seems to knock down my will power more than even alcohol can do. What do any of you do to power through the munchies? Hide the snacks before you even pack your bowl? Munch your way through a head of lettuce?
(Please don't suggest 'quit weed!', because Ambien and Lunesta made me sleep-walk, and I'd much rather be red-eyed and fat than fall downstairs in my sleep again.)

Don't have bad food in the house at all. It is an instant high and the munchies don't set in right away, so go to bed right after. Find foods that you can eat the crap out of that is low cal, like popcorn.4

Well if I have the munchies and am trying to curb the calories, I stick to sweet, strongly flavored fruits. They tend to knock my munchies down fast and fit into the days calories/macros pretty easily. Things like berries, or an orange.0

I don't smoke weed for that reason. There are certain strains that are better for certain needs (like helping you sleep or helping increase your appetite). Unfortunately I'm not really sure which strain would be best to help with sleep, but if there are any dispensaries in your area you could probably talk to them and find out what type to get to help you with sleep that would maybe not give you the munchies so bad. Other than that I would hide the snacks, or else find something low cal to snack on. I agree that cannabis is a better med than Ambien or Lunesta.0

Popcorn is good as previously mentioned. Rice cakes would be good if they weren't impossible to eat with cottonmouth. Steamed veggies are good too. Just add a little oil and spices and they'll taste pretty good.0

Ambien is scary. Yeesh. Anyway... other than not keeping snacks around there isnt much to be done.
Maybe get some low calorie recipes that yield big or lots of pieces per serving.
Just like the rest of us who love to eat- we have to snack smart...substance induced or not.

Have you ever tried CBDs? I take them before bed for my epilepsy (works very well, as good as the debilitating meds) but they also help me sleep really well too. They don;t make you high, just a little goofy and relaxed. I take the CBDs before i brush my teeth, read for 15 or 20 minutes then turn out the lights and I'm asleep before my head hits the pillow.
They are manufactured in CO but shipped nationally as the THC content is low enough to be considered "industrial hemp."0 -
Can't help you with the food part, but I would like to note that, just like other drugs, marijuana affects individuals differently. Not everyone has increased hunger as a result of inhaling/ingesting marijuana. The reason I'm pointing that out is - have you ever considered whether your need to munch may be a result of, or maybe just intensified by, your perception that it is supposed to make you "intensely hungry" "like everyone else on the planet"? Just as many of us may struggle with real hunger vs. perceived hunger (emotional or habitual hunger or whatever you want to call it), maybe that's adding to your feelings of "intense hunger"? I'm not saying you aren't one whose body reacts to it with hunger, just something to maybe consider.0

This is a great suggestion. Some studies have shown that the medical benefits of marijuana can be obtained without the THC, and thus without the high and its effects.2 -

This. I'd try to find out if there is a different strain that you can use. Short of that, how much do you like veggies? My worst snack time is fixing dinner after a long swim. I have to have little sweet peppers, cucumbers, carrots, etc handy so that I don't blow my dinner calories on crap.0 -

I'm in Oregon, so maybe they have high CBD weed here? I'll check it out! The strain I prefer for sleep has a CBD percentage of .20, which I'm gonna guess is not a lot.0 -
Snack on baby carrots - you can eat a ton and its very miniscule amount of calories.
That means you have to empty your house from junk food.
Also perhaps smoke weed when you have lots of daily calories remaining, and you have prepared foods in the fridge (so you know you can eat everything in X Tupperware).
I would treat that the same way I treat alcohol - leave myself some space because I know I will need those calories used.0 -
I actually read a study that said it doesn't have to cause the munchies...it is whatever you are actually thinking about prior to your brain chemistry being changed.
As well not my personal experience but I know someone in your shoes and it doesn't hinder their weight loss...insomia.

That's very interesting! I've never smoked with anyone who does not get hungry after smoking, and it's kind of a weed-culture joke/cliche, so I assumed it was universal.0 -

Do you get the same amount of munchies if you eat it rather than smoke it? I gave some pot fudge to someone with chronic insomnia and she slept great, no munchies.0

Nope, I don't really get munchies from edibles, it just always takes like four hours for edibles to hit me, and I want something a little faster than that.0 -

There are other methods of fighting insomnia that don't include drugs, either of the prescription or the recreational kind. I'm not doubting you suffer from serious insomnia, but understand your use of marijuana has likely created a dependency and addiction for you. I know a lot of smokers don't consider themselves addicted or think it is "as bad" as other things. And while I don't think it's any worse than a glass of wine every night which plenty of people do, just be aware of your possible dependency on it and take care of yourself.1 -
I don't really get the munchies, either. I used to when I was younger, but I think it's because I expected to get them, if that makes any sense.0

About fifteen years ago I lost a lot of weight and I was doing A LOT of weed. Red grapes and watermelon. I had them washed/cut and ready to go.0

I discovered that if I just don't start eating, then I'm good. BUT, if I eat even one thing, I'm screwed on calories for the rest of the day. Also, I keep sunflower seeds in the house to snack on, not bad except the sodium.1

Unfortunately, I'm very aware of numerous other insomnia fighting techniques. I was diagnosed with insomnia as a child, and have tried literally dozens of options. I've seen doctors, therapists, psychiatrists, done sleep studies, and have tried everything from meditation to polyphasic sleep. Weed works for me, so I'm sticking with it.0 -

If I had insomnia, migraines and a drug habit I'd address those and not worry so much about hunger pangs. Sorry to be harsh.5
