I am having issues. I'm going CRAZY. Has anyone had weight lifting or other exercise in general cause the insides of your MUSCLES to itch like crazy for days and days!? Omg I'm dying. Itchies I can't scratch ughhhh. It's mostly in my quads and hips. Going on 4 days now... ughhhhhh!!! And it got worse today after I lifted again (it almost felt better this morning) I am afraid it's going to start in my biceps and shoulders... WHAT IS IT AND HOW DO I FIX IT!?

To be clear. It is NOT my skin that feels itchy. It's the muscles. :s

I am assuming its exercise related. But I guess it doesn't rule out anything out.

Errr... so I asked a pharmacist if there was something for my legs and he said to go see a doctor and get a blood test because it could be liver or blood sugar related.

    Well crap.

Good luck. Could you try taking Benadryl and see if it helps?

a continual itch? or during a workout? I know niacin in many pre-workouts make people have a itchy feeling.

Fairly continual. It's not so bad when I'm sitting (though it is still there) but walking around makes it itchy and it's bad in the evenings when I'm not "distracted" by work. I was hoping working out would make it better. I did squats and rows but by the time I was on bench it was super itchy again (on a plus note the irritation did seem to result in some great squats because the itch feels better the more I tense my muscles...)

are you sure the feeling is an itch and not a muscle ache? i feel a somewhat burning feeling that could be similar to itching i guess....

Yeah, I'm have had muscle aches and DOMS before, this is not like that. It's not like muscle fatigue either. I've never had this before ever. Kind of feels like I have little creepies crawling in my muscles (oh God I hope not). Kind of makes my want to really clamp my muscles or... try to stick something under them to scratch... which is obviously a TERRIBLE idea.

I wish they would just hurt instead. At first I thought maybe it was my muscles "healing". Then I read it could be blood vessels expanding... but... it just seems too long of a time? I dunno.

No... does rolling the muscle help?

Maybe stop working or for a few days to see if it goes away, then you'll know if it really IS muscle-related, and not something like bilirubin in the bloodstream. Which you don't want.

It's usually due to muscle growth and it is restricting the blood flow. That could be what's causing it and it usually goes away after a week or so. It's only if you have been going really hard.

I exercised Saturday and then not again until Thursday (4 days with just fairly light activity)... it faded a bit but didn't go completely away. I'm going to go ahead and Google bilirubin now.

This is what I'm hoping it is haha. I've been progressing on weights but I don't think I'd call it working super hard. I only just squatted 100 lb. And I usually wait two sessions before increasing.

Not sure... Rubbing is somewhat satisfying but doesn't go deep enough. Don't own a roller...
Do you know Meg? Are you married to one? Hahah (off topic lol).

Hmm. Good question. I think my dad gets that sometimes. I haven't before. I'll Google to see if the description is similar.

ETA: Sounds like a good fit actually!
People with restless legs syndrome have uncomfortable sensations in their legs (and sometimes arms or other parts of the body) and an irresistible urge to move their legs to relieve the sensations. The condition causes an uncomfortable, "itchy," "pins and needles," or "creepy crawly" feeling in the legs. The sensations are usually worse at rest, especially when lying or sitting."
    - webMD

That's almost the same wording I used, isn't it! I was even doing high knees to try to fix it the other night...
    Causes of Restless Legs Syndrome
In most cases, doctors do not know the cause of restless legs syndrome; however, they suspect that genes play a role. Nearly half of people with RLS also have a family member with the condition.

Other factors associated with the development or worsening of restless legs syndrome include:

Chronic diseases. Certain chronic diseases and medical conditions, including iron deficiency, Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and peripheral neuropathy often include symptoms of RLS. Treating these conditions often gives some relief from RLS symptoms.
^ well that's no good - should still see the doctor then! Hoping my iron isn't down again. Or that I have any of the other stuff lol
Medications. Some types of medications, including antinausea drugs, antipsychotic drugs, some antidepressants, and cold and allergy medications containing sedating antihistamines, may worsen symptoms.
^ haven't taken most of those...
Pregnancy. Some women experience RLS during pregnancy, especially in the last trimester. Symptoms usually go away within a month after delivery.
    ^ um. lol. Probably not.

You need to go see a doc if it continues. Could be something serious.

I got an itchy feeling in my quads when I first took up running. It lasted about a week.

I'd second a doc if it continues long. I've never had this happen, even when lifting at new PR levels.

Thanks everyone. I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow so I'll talk to her about it then. My dad thought it was still weird that it has lasted for 4 days. His only lasts for a few hours at a time.

If anyone is curious, the doctor said it's probably because of low iron again. Who knew restless leg was a symptom of low iron. I didn't until I read it yesterday!

Of course restless leg in your thighs instead of calves is also weird. But oh well.

I highly doubt it's restless leg- if it's directly related to working out.

I get very itchy with cardio type stuff- not lifting. And my doctor said you can be allergic to exercise- not sweat- but the actual exercising- fine whatever- I just take a none drosey benedryl and go about my bisness.

Are you taking any types of supplements? Preworkout, BCAA's, etc?

Gah I hate making these assumptions, perhaps I have you mixed up with someone else! But I recall a post about you being pregnant? I have had two friends develop RLS during pregnancy and one described it as a relentless itch she couldn't scratch. Just so thought, hope I didn't offend if I'm thinking of the wrong member!

Hahah I don't think it was me! As far as I know, I'm not pregnant. But maybe I said I wanted to be LOL.
