cold water vs room temp?

I recently saw a response to someone saying that drinking very cold water can burn calories to bring it up to body temp and in return can boost your metabolism. I was speaking with my mom today about this and she had also heard this theory. However, I've had several doctors tell me I need to be drinking room temperature water as food digests better at that temp and THAT will boost metabolism. I always drink iced water just because it's easier to get in enough per day but was wondering what others thoughts/facts on this were.

Cold water will make you burn more calories so during meals just have room temp water then go back to cold0

Everything I have ready says that it doesn't matter what temperature it is but that most people recommend drinking cold water just because it is usually more enjoyable and then you are more likely to drink more of it.0

I think the calorie expenditure required to warm up the ice water is insignificant. Drink it however you prefer it in order to ensure that you ARE drinking an adequate amount. I'm saying this to myself as well - I prefer flavored water to be room temp and plain water to be icy cold. But I don't drink enough of either!0

i always drink cold water. your body always has to warm drink or food to warm temp before it can be absorbed so therefore you are using a few calories for this. however if you are really thirsty it is best to drink room temp water so it can be absorbed sooner. anyway water is water. as long as you are drinking its not that big of a deal.0

Just read yesterday that drinking ice water can burn up to an extra 500 calories. :flowerforyou:0

If cold water does make you burn more calories than room temperature water i can't imagine it would make a massive difference to anything. It can't be a big number of calories. Just drink your water how you like it.0

SOOO, basically IT IS ALL about DRINKING the WATER! Drinking Water will BOOST Metabolism, as long as you can get it in you will be OK. So if cold works better for you, drink it that way, if room temp-so be it. I have always known this intuitively>>>Just Drink it the way I like it and the science of it will take care of itself.0 -

I have read similar material and understand the same thing. It doesnt matter. And whatever the "Burn" may be to bring the water up to room temp is very insignificant.0 -
let's say you adhere to the "eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day" nutritional recommendation. In 64 ounces of water, there are 1,892.72 grams. So to warm up all that water in the course of a day, your body burns 70,030 calories, or 70 Calories. And over time, that 70 Calories a day adds up. So, while you definitely shouldn't depend on ice water consumption to replace exercise or a healthy diet, drinking cold water instead of warm water does, in fact, burn some extra Calories!

70 calories x 7 days a week = 490 calories, I would call that significant0
