Losing weight is about calorie deficit. Eat fewer calories than you burn and you will lose weight. "Toning" is not really a thing, but losing the layer of fat covering your existing muscle will make you look more toned.
When you are eating at a deficit you want to support existing lean muscle mass, so you lose a larger % of fat. What gives you the best shot at keeping lean muscle is eating enough calories (ie: moderate deficit) eating enough protein and strength training.
There are no foods to stay away from. Just keep an eye on meeting macro goals.1 -
TeaBea (above) hit the nail on the head. I would also add to make sure you get enough fiber through the day (~35g).0

I am all about simple. It takes away from a lot of the guessing and "recipe" entering in the tracker. For me, when I get into searching for "recipes" it becomes overwhelming and takes a ton of time so I generally will only make a "recipe" type meal when I have company.
I also tend to eat mainly the same things in a rotation and that can be made in one pan. Ex, Dinner= (one pan everything in the oven): salmon w/pesto (pesto from TJs), cut up yams (w/EVOO, S&P, &chili flakes), broccoli florets (evoo, S&P-squeezed lemon after baking).
I make big batches of beans, pasta sauces, roasted veggies each week.
Steam a ton of asparagus, green beans, and cabbage.
Hard boil eggs.
Make hummus.
Make a big pan of roasted, bone in chicken (to use in different things).
Maybe make turkey taco meat for taco salads, etc.
Wash and cut up lettuce and salad veggies.
I also make sure I have almonds, some fruit (berries, avocado and citrus mainly).
Then from there it is just kinda--grab a protein, fat and vegetable, and a carb in the form of fruit or veggie carb (yam) ( I stay away from dairy, carbs not in fruit or veggie form, alcohol (on occasions I indulge!), processed foods).
If you are looking for recipes....kalynskitchen.com, skinnytaste.com, tasteofhome, marthastewart.com, bonapetite.com are some of my faves.

Eat food with nutrients. It isn't that complicated. Your body needs protein, fats, vitamins, minerals. You get those things from eating a variety of foods.
Protein- eggs, chicken, pork, turkey, fish, dairy products, nuts, seeds, tofu, beans, lentils, some vegetables
Eat the fruits and vegetables you like. Try spinach instead of iceburg lettuce. Try roasted or grilled vegetables instead of boiled or steamed. Put vegetables in soups, sauces, casseroles, stir fry, pizza, etc if you don't like them plain.
Try whole grains.
For weight loss just eat food that fits your calorie goal.
