Advice needed please....knees and exercise

Hi I'm new here and I hope you can give me some advice. I started exercising properly a few months ago but I need to change the classes as I have bad knees and I have been advised not to do anything high impact on the knees eg running.
My plan is:
Mondays - walk 2 miles ish to a friend's.

Tuesdays weight watchers weigh in

Wednesday deep water aqua aerobics class at local pool 45 minutes

Thursdays body balance at local gym 45 minutes

Saturday body pump class 1 hour, followed by a low impact cardio class which is 45 minutes at local gym.

Sunday beginner yoga class one hour at the gym. Depending on plans each week I may do a swim after yoga.

The classes during the week are after work and the classes on the weekend are in the morning so I can get them out of the way and carry on with social plans. I was already aiming to do something every day but now need to step away from classes like body combat and too much body pump. I also have a fit bit so I do try to increase general steps and activity level each day too. I have been enjoying exercise and I do notice a difference when I don't do some for a while and I know doing something is better than nothing, which had been a problem for a while! I guess I'm just concerned as I have a lot of weight to lose.
Thanks for reading x

Sounds like you are doing something very sustainable. If you want to do a bit more you could gradually increase your walking.

Is the advice to limit higher impact due to weight or some sort of injury?

    Best of luck.

if your goal is to lose weight, that comes from what you eat. Low impact exercises for knees are things like bike or elliptical. I have bad knees from surgeries injuries etc. and i've found weight lifting has helped to strengthen the muscles around my joints. i do low reps with heavy weights for my knees. High reps causes me pain. Also making sure your knees are very warmed up before exercising will help, and keeping them warm. I wear neoprene knee sleeves to keep my knees warm and compressed during some weight lifting

Walking is not the greatest for knees, especially if you are overweight, walking up and down hills can be as high impact as jogging. Your best bet is the bike. and diet.

I agree with the weight lifting for building the muscles around those knees. A year ago I was walking with a cane because of bad knees. I started weight lifting (leg presses/leg extensions at lightest weights and low reps. I also did 10 minutes of stationary bike to start. I was feeling terrific in a matter of months. I now can leg press 300 pounds with no pain, bike for an hour and my knees have never felt better! Remember, go easy and light to start. Gradually add weight as you adapt to the soreness and gain strengh and then increase your reps. You will not be sorry!

Pilates and barre are both low impact and good for building the muscles around the knees and the muscles that often contribute to knee pain from imbalances.
