Take away food is usually high in sodium and next day you will see bigger number on scale due to water retention. It's not fat, it's not real weight gain. Do best that you can, log everything tightly (kitchen scale), move as much as you can and be patient. Don't get down about this...you can't gain weight over 1 meal and especially not with staying under 2000...at worst you ate at maintenance calories for a day. Not a big deal really. A lot of people here do maintenance level for 1-2 days in a week. It will slow down your progress a bit but it will not prevent it. Whatever suits you and is sustainable to you is a way to go! Don't give up8

I agree. Don't beat yourself up over this. It's only one meal. It's not like you ate 5000 calories! Look at it as a learning experience for what you are ok with eating on those extra calorie days (as most of us have them). One meal won't break you! You can always do some extra exercising and/or eat healthier the next few days. I'm slowly learning what foods I am not good at moderating yet (like chips and doritos). But the odd "less healthy" meal is ok and is actually recommended by many health professionals. Don't quit now.3 -
Don't worry! That was a pretty good choice, you were not over maintenance cals, so not even a cheat. Just water. Know that it will go.
I had 2 weeks a couple of weeks ago (around my TOTM) where my weight just bobbled up and down. I kept going and trusting the numbers and sure enough the month loss is right on the button.
It feels hard when it doesn't move, but trust it. You'll be good.2 -
Drink extra water to help flush out the water retention that most of us experience when we eat chinese food, which is notoriously high in sodium. Give it a few more days, don't panic or backslide because of this teeny lil blip xx0

No drama.
You haven't gained bodyfat, you're seeing increased water levels showing on the scale. As the goal is to lose bodyfat over a sustained time frame then nothing bad has occurred.
Once you get your head round these scale fluctuations you're golden.
I regularly ate out and had takeaways whilst losing 5st. I'd have gone stir-crazy if not. It's all about creating a sustainable and enjoyable way of going about losing weight. If you enjoy a Chinese have a Chinese, just fit it in.

its probably water1

As many have said, water, but I'd also like to point out that many people can undo an entire week's deficit in one day (meal). A cheat meal is fine, but always be mindful. People on here say cheat meals are bad, but that's because they took them as an excuse to go crazy.
You logged yours and shouldn't see much of an impact in the next day or so, but cheat wisely.0 -
People have to stop obsessing about daily/weekly weigh-ins. Your weight can fluctuate due to all sorts of things, not actual fat gains related. Water retention due to sodium and exercise, hormones/period/pms, digestion timing, constipation, weighing yourself after you eat/drink, weighing yourself at a different time of day than normal, batteries on the scale getting old and the list goes on. Heck, if you weigh yourself after taking a shower it can make the scale go up!
OP-focus on your first weigh-in of the month and compare that to your last weigh-in of the month. That will give you a more accurate idea of your loss trends.6 -
Echoing what others have said:
1) It's water. It'll drop off in a day or two.
2) Even if not, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Carry on as normal; you'll have forgotten all about it in a month or two.

OP was under 2000 calories... that's in no way undoing a weeks deficit, that's possibly not even maintenance....0 -

I accounted for that in the end and also noted that in OP'S situation it's probably water. I just lobbed that bit out there for the others that will read the thread because they, too, have issues with cheat days.1 -
Hugs and move on. Yeah, it's water.
And you made me remember my fave Chinese place near an old job...chicken chow mein and chicken in black bean sauce were both so good. Only been about 14 years...haven't found any Chinese place I love that much here.0 -
Thank you all just getting frustrated that it dosnt seem to be coming off.. Going to see if there is a trend maybe thank you all again x1

It's the sodium. Just keep at it and move forward. You will show a loss soon. The key is to not eat that way every day. It's just one meal. Your body will adjust.
And it could also be the fact you worked out and your muscles are retaining water for repair but I think it's more likely that it's the sodium from the meal out.

I feel you OP - I always get anxious at how long it takes for me to lose water weight after a cheat meal, vacation days, etc. But I'm trying not to pressure myself too much.0

If the fluctuations bother you, you might try something like the happy scale app where you weigh in as often as you like and even though weight may stay the same or even go up it shows the downward trend:)

And there is no way of knowing if the takeaway was logged correctly. Chinese food can be extremely calorie dense so if it was logged as say 300 cals then that could be upto 1000 cals out. So it IS possible to undo an entire weeks deficit.0
