I asked a similar question a while back. I made a blog post that compiled all the good advice I got. You can check it out here if you want: http://toddlersnturbo.wordpress.com/2011/06/09/intercepting-a-binge/

Its "technicially" exercise, but I usually go for a walk. Or cook a low cal meal that takes some time to make. Then you still get some food but healthy and portioned.
  • im to exhausted to deal with the emotional part afterwards so i say screw it, it not worth it and sometimes i also call my OA supporter and we talk it out

When I KNOW I want to "Binge" or Catch Myself in a "Binge," the first thing I Do is Determine What am I "stressing" about, then bring it to My Consciousness and weigh the pros and cons, then accept that Life dictates that whatever it is will likely end up somewhere in the middle OR in reality there is NO Stress! Next thing I do is decide that I will eat ONE thing that I really want, and Eat it CONSCIOUSLY, Then I get BACK on Track. The reality is I probably wanted to EAT anyway, so I get that Snickers or French Fries or whatever and move on.

    Be Well

I would usually binge on certain foods like chips or cookies. My solution was to not have these things in the house. I live 12 miles from the nearest store. So if I felt a binge coming on I couldn't just go to the kitchen and grab the unhealthy stuff because it wasn't there.

Also if I thought 'well I'll just drive to the store....' I always kept telling myself about the money I would be wasting on the gas and food.

Oh and cleaning/housework is a good distraction for me!!! Hope that helps some!!
  • I usually try to go workout, but it isnt always an option.
So my solution is to drink as much water as I can and then grab a piece of minty gum. It shuts up my cravings and keeps my jaws occupied.
    Hope this helps!

    Oddly enough I do math.
I go to my food diary and add up my calorie overs and under for the past 10-days.
If I'm really hungry... It's usually because I've been under my calorie goals too many days in a row.

If I'm not really hungry I'll get completely distracted by the message boards or other stuff on the internet.

And also reading the success stories helps keep me focused!!

What has been working for me, although its kind of silly, is that i do a couple of handstands in a safe place in my apartment against a wall.

If you're going to try, be safe for crying out loud. Stretch your hamstrings especially the inner part of your thighs. Do handstands until you feel like you've nailed it sometimes it takes a couple of tries. Then maybe two more for good measure. Drink a good sized glass of water.

Then get out of the house immediately and go buy (to go) or buy the ingredients for the biggest salad you can get.

Bring it home. Get in the shower and rinse from the neck down with cool water, it takes only a minute.

Then eat that salad til you cant eat anymore.

If its late at night Mc Donald's has salads and oatmeal which works or call a diner and go pick a salad up (not a cheeseburger)!

Its a little physical exertion + a little distraction + a little bodily refreshment.

Some variations on this practice: instead of going out for a salad, do handstands (gotta get that blood flowing its important) drink that good-sized glass of water, take a full shower give your feet a good scrub, give yourself a good moisturizing, paint your toe nails and your fingernails. Then eat. Try to eat something spicy and drink a lot of water. The spicy slows you down, the water fills you up.

I try to recall my last binge and the effects it had on me. I try to remember how crappy I feel afterwards, and how much the scale will increase the next day. I think about the internal effects the food will have on my body and visualize fat being deposited, especially on my belly! Then I think about how bloated, tired, and gross I feel.

Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't!
