Summer is here, which means we are going to be seeing 110+ degree days. For me it gets difficult to eat when then temp are that high. Smoothies on the other hand tend to be light and cooling. Want start adding some protein to them, but have heard conflicting views on which is a better source.

What is your preference and why?

I couldn't decided because of the views being so conflicting.... so I have both! I have soy in the morning (which is usually post work out) then whey later in the day.

I was listening to a Jillian Michael's podcast and she's not a big fan of soy at all. Personally I do whey, I feel more energetic and full from it.

links to breast cancer. "The culprit in question is the group of soy isoflavones, plant hormones that mimics estrogen in the body. Some research has shown that isolated isoflavones, a.k.a. phytoestrogens, contribute to the growth of tumors in the breast, endometrium and uterus."

But, the research has focused on the isolated isoflavones, and soy in like, edamame and tempeh, might have other health benefits that outweigh the sum of its parts...

WHEY (unless you have sensitivities or allergies or milk or animal products then I would go with HEMP based protein powder), I don't like soy for a number of reasons:

    1) Soy is the #1 reason why the Amazonian rain forest is being destroyed (to grow soy).

    2) Soy contains pro-inflammatory Omega 6 and other isolates known to cause cancers.

    3) Many people can digest whey better than soy (absorbing more nutrients).

    4) Pigs fed whey gained more muscle mass than pigs fed soy. Sows fed whey produced bigger and and more robust piglettes (from Bob Evans Farm, yes the Ohio chain of country restaurants has it's own dedicated farms, one thing I love about Bob Evans).

    Pros about HEMP:

Helps with balance and spacial perception (like a gymnast doing flips)

    Good source of protein

Roller Pigeons fed hemp had better aerobatics in the air and more muscle mass than those who did not eat hemp seeds. Source, my own flock of roller pigeons.

whey!! Soy has estrogen in it and extra estrogen for women especially can be bad!!!! It can be linked to female carncers (especially breast cancer) it is also not good for young growing boys either!! So definitely WHEY protein!!! We also do NOT need extra Soy during "that time of the month"!!

It's a certain type she likes only. I think she's a bigger fan of the coconut milk.

Soy is still a bit controversial, but I think if you use it occasionally verses every day, I feel that is ok. I personally like and use hemp protein.

Much of the controversy over soy has been created by biased research conducted by the meat and dairy industry. Scientific research shows no connection between cancer risk and soy consumption. It's mostly politically/economically motivated scare tactics. These page have good articles about soy and its controversies, complete with citations to scientific studies and links with more information.

The reason to avoid soy would be fear of GMO-soy.
My recommendation is a non-GMO plant-based protein source. Humans were not meant to consume the secretions of non-human animals.

My own personal preference (no back up research) is whey protein isolate.

I like the taste and the texture better and it keeps me fuller.

As far as taste and texture, whey. Its also better absorbed and utilized because its closer to what the human body produces.

I use soy though because it has the most iron of any of the protein supplements. While studies have linked soy to negative health effects, its already in almost everything you eat in one form or another, so unless you grow all of your own food, a soy protein shake wont make a significant difference in any category besides protein and iron.

Hemp is like the super plant, you can do anything with it, so it probably is a good source of protein as well, but at least in the US it should be more expensive since hemp has to be imported.

Hadn't even realized hemp was an option. Will have to look into that one more.

Having tried being a vegetarian several times onthe past, I like the idea of plant based foods when possible. However, have also found I feel stronger when eating meat. Finding healthy ways to meet both nutritional needs and philosophical ones can be difficult.

I have autoimmune disease. I have read that Soy is bad for my thyroid, so I would use whey. Plus, I feel even more tired if I have soy.

Soy protein should be avoided as it has a hormone called insulin growth factor -1 which is bad for adults and grown children. I don't know much about whey. Fermented soy is fine but I don't think you can put that in your smoothie. So I don't pick either since I don't know whey but I know soy protein is bad. Read bad.
