So what do most of you choose as your goal weight?

I looked up my BMI range then chose a slightly higher number for flexibility, I do have a larger frame wide hips and shoulders so I don't want to expect too much. I also would like to switch to recomp as I get closer to the goal. My ultimate goal is 150 but I have never been a healthy weight as an adult so I really have no idea. I will listen to my body though If I could drop more fat at 150 I will.1

I was around 135 a few years ago and would like to be slimmer than that, so I I just chose 120 and figured I'll evaluate as I get closer to that. I'm 5'6" so that puts me on the lower side of the normal BMI category.1

Healthy is around 125 to 155 for my height and frame according to what I can find out. I was between 130 and 140 from teenage to when I quit smoking age 33. Then I gained up to 145 pounds for several years. That weight naturally went off during a year where I was more active and I slimmed down to 130 again without diets or calorie deficit. I never watched what I ate or dieted until I put on some weight after reaching the menopause in my 50's. I gained pounds so that after menopause I weighed175. That's what I weighed for pregnancy weights! I quit eating deserts, except occasionaly, I put a few limits on bread and other carbs like rice and potatoes and I lost weight sowly without any bother. I decided to begin counting calories and with a more exact management of my calorie intake I lost down to 130. I had no flab. I believe I had even lost quite a bit of muscle as I lost that weight. I maintained around that weight, sometimes a bit lower for 5 years. After about three years I became really hungry. I still wonder exactly why I decided to stop keeping my calories at a certain level. It could have been the hunger that set in, the lack of freedom I felt I wanted to have about eating. So I gave myself the permission to eat freely and gained the weight back. Last December, about three years later I have come back to calorie counting and restriction of calories to lose weight because I saw that my health was becoming compromised. As I have no health problems and no medications so far at 66 years old I want to see a future without metaformin and beta blockers. So, I don't much care about the numbers, haven't even got a scale. What matters to me is walking without getting out of breath on stairs and up hills, being active and feeling light and comfortable with my body.
I like this thread, there are so many ways of seeing weight and body size, and the interesting choices people are making for themselves.3 -
My goal is to get back in to my skinny jeans from when I was a full time yoga teacher.
I have a large frame and the only time I've had a BMI as low as 24 was after 6 weeks of under eating and over exercising during boot camp.

Ha, by elbow breadth I am Medium frame, by wrist circumference Thin frame.
Makes sense, I guess, my bones are thin/narrow and wrists tiny but my skeleton frame-build is pretty average.
The calculator doesn't like that they don't match.
I agree that the size one "should" be, as a general goal, is the size you are when active and eating moderately, and feeling good and healthy.1 -
I am 5'5" and currently 142. Started at 159 in January. I would like to get down to 138 - bmi 23. However, I haven't been that weight since my late 40's (I'm 57) and wonder if I'll look too thin. I have an athletic build.
I went shopping yesterday at Kohl's and some size 6 jeans were too big! Vanity sizing!1 -
My first goal is just to not be overweight on the BMI chart. My ultimate goal is to be the weight I felt best at which happens to be around the middle of the healthy weight range for my height. I have weighed less than that in the past and did not feel or look my best at the lowest end of that range. So no I didn't choose a random number for my goal weight. I based it on my personal experience and the BMI chart.1

I'm 5'6.5" and was 182 when I decided that I had enough of the gaining weight and not liking what I saw in the mirror. I didn't really have a goal weight at the time. After I started losing a good amount of weight I decides on 126. Now that I've lost over forty lbs and am between 136-139. I've decided I'm happy with what I see. No I just want to tone and strengthen. I don't think I'd look good at 126.1

I started at 285. It's an ever changing number. At first i thought i'd look awesome at 220 then when i got to 220 i realized that certainly wouldn't be it and all this time i had also hoped to get to 185 as it would be 100lbs lost but I don't know if i'll ever be able to get that low now, bleh.1

I used to have a goal weight and would adjust my lifestyle as necessary. Didn't work for me because it was never a lifestyle I wanted to maintain.
Now I have a goal lifestyle and have adjusted my goal weight to align with it. Much happier this way.4 -
I am 5'6" and my goal is 135-140lbs. That would put me in the middle of the normal bmi range. Also, I remember being really happy with my body last time I was 140. However, that was 12 years ago and my perspective may have changed. I fully expect to reassess my goals once I get into the 140s.
I'm also 5'6" and my original goal weight was also 135lbs. After I hit that though I wasn't happy with where I was at so I kept losing and got down to around 117 lbs (low end of healthy bmi range ). Reevaluated and purposely regained a few pounds and now I hang out in the 127-130 range.
Op, there's nothing wrong with adjusting your goals down the road as you start fine tuning things. Pick a reasonable and healthy weight goal and then after you get to that point you can adjust as needed2 -

Where is that on the bmi chart for your height?
I'm not sure as I don't really know how to calculate that...I'm 46 (almost 47!!), 5'2, and I think 123 would put me around the middle to low range...but I'm using the comments above as a guide....Someone else may be able to tell us better!
At 5'2" and 123lbs, you'd have a bmi of 22.52 -
The national numbers are bunk in my opinion. I am 5'10", my college tennis playing weight was 165-170, and if I don't weigh that now at age 54 I am considered overweight. Last year I got down to 185 and it was too low by 5 pounds or so. So it depends on each person. But this BMI and total body weight that determines obesity and being overweight is geared to the lowest common denominator. Get to where you feel good, your blood pressure is good, and your cholesterol is good.
I was at 218 April 15th, with a high cholesterol and my doc wanted me on a plant "ONLY" diet. I started back on FMP April 25th at 214 and am at 205 today. Meat and fish is a mandatory part of my Food Porn diet and I will prove doc wrong with monthly cholesterol checks. I went way overboard on my chicken fried steaks, fries, gravy, Blue Bell Home Made Vanilla Ice Cream with Scoop Frito's, I mean I went all out, and that was my cholesterol problem. Back on track again now.3 -
Im 5'2. Started at 235.
First goal is to obviously get under 200 which Im close at 203
Second goal is to get to 150. Seemed like a pretty average weight for a human
Third goal is to get to 130. I would be at the high end of my bmi however I am full figured. Im afraid if I get too thin I will look funny4 -
I was 128 all through high school & college (5' 7") which is on the low end of the BMI scale, then one day I woke up and was 140 - still healthy but I could see flub around my waist. I so picked 130 since it's close to my ideal but it's a round number.1

Whatever weight I no longer have to suck in this Apple shaped gut. For those interested in what's been working for me, lifting weights.
I swear I've never had the fat come off my stomach this fast with just cardio. Two months into lifting and a deficit and my stomach is the first to go. That has never happened until I started lifting weights.5 -
Initially I chose the weight on my driver's license (175) as my goal, which was 50 lbs less than my starting weight. When I reached and passed that, I aimed for 160ish, because I had felt pretty healthy at that weight in the past and almost in the healthy zone. A couple of years later, I was back up over 200 and decided to do something about it. This time my goal was a healthy bmi, rather than a specific weight. I'm now about 126 to 127 with a bmi of 20 ish, not sure if I want to go any further, or just work on conditioning.2

You are awesome, Thankyou for helping! Next question would be, is that a good number? And what is an appropriate BMI for a lady my age and height?
And i'd like to add...I love my size right now, I'm just trying to shape it into something I can love more...I hate seeing pictures of my twenties, when I was lucky to see 100 lbs on a good day and a size 1....I looked sickly...But NOOONE could tell me, I wouldn't listen or see what they saw.......Never again...1 -
I'm 5'5"
When I ran a half marathon in 2003 I was 113 pounds (age 24)
When I got married in 2008 I was 120 pounds (age 29)
When I got pregnant in 2011 I was 140 pounds (age 32)
When I got pregnant in 2014 I was 155 pounds (age 34)
I started in January at 167 and now down to 150 (age 36), which is my lowest post-pregnancy weight.
I think my goal is around 130 to hopefully account for some more muscle than I had in my 20s.1 -
I am 5'7, aged 41 and currently at 146. I'm small boned, and I am aiming for 130-135. I weighed less than that before I had kids (126-130) and looked fantastic, but I dieted back down to 129 after my first child was born and found it totally impossible to maintain it without being constantly ravenous. I was doing WW at the time and worked with my WW Leader to find a weight that was healthy and reasonably maintainable - that turned out to be 131-133. I maintained that for 2 years quite easily until I had my second child (and gained 50lb during pregnancy, the last 10-15 of which has adhered itself to me and refuses to budge without major exercise and MFP tracking efforts. But my youngest is now seven years old and I can't blame pregnancy weight anymore - it's really down to slower metabolism as I've aged, and a lot less discipline about what I eat! Hence I am rigorously on MFP to shift those pounds!)
I've started going to a fabulous gym (Get In Shape For Women), which supports weight loss with a nutritionist etc also, and she told me that most women are happy with a body fat % of 25%. Right now my body fat % is 33% so I am interested to see what it will be when I weigh 135.1 -
I chose 140 which is cut off of healthy BMI. I'm comfortably maintaining between 137 and 139 (I'm 5'3"), but would like to get to 125 for vanity's sake.1

I'm not sure where I'll end up. But I'm aiming for 140lb (5'5'' female). Started at 300, and I'm at 190 now. I picked the number that is about 10lb under the top of the healthy BMI range for my height. I may or may not go that far. It just depends on how I feel. My losses have slowed significantly, so I've resigned myself to the fact that the last 50lb is going to take as long as or longer than the 1st 100lb. I was 160lb at one point in high school and I was happier with my body. My main goal is to get off of my diabetes medications and be completely diet controlled. I've already eliminated the need for blood pressure meds, so I'm trying to focus on that more than the scale. Best of luck!2

Normal bmi is anywhere from 18.5-24.9, so at 22.5 you are doing great!

That's great!! So how many calories did you start at to lose and now that you've lost so much, how many do you eat now?

I chose something that I feel is actually realistic and attainable for me: 130. Because I'm so short, by BMI this still classifies me as being overweight. But as someone who has always been extremely obese, and started at 290, I would be completely thrilled to be 130-135. I don't think I can ever weigh 110 like I'm "supposed" to.3
-
Like many, I looked to BMI for my goal. I picked a weight in the middle of the normal BMI range. Since I'm 5'7", 140 lbs is my current goal weight. I started at 242 last August and am down to 185 as of this morning. I've been overweight/obese my entire adult life, so I honestly have no idea what 140 lbs will look like on me, but I'm excited to find out, and if I need to readjust my goal (up or down), I'll do so. As others have said, it's really more about how you feel rather than a number on the scale.3
-
No goal. I only look to make progress and see where it takes me.1
-
My goal weight is set at 185 (picked it because I liked how I was at that weight before I put on a bunch of fat), I'm about 10 pounds away from that. I realized that the number doesn't really matter because I've been this weight before, but was nowhere near as fit. At 5'6, I'm still considered obese at my current weight, I'd be overweight at 185. I feel I have a realistic goal body and will continue to strive for it. When I'm ready to maintain, I will increase my caloric intake and continue to workout because I love it. Maintenance does scare me a little, but not as much as last time because I'm comfortable with the changes I've made in my eating habits and feel they're permanent.
Just calculated my ideal weight, it's quite a range: 114-154. Another calculator said 140-159, it used body frame size (discovered I'm a large, not shocked by that).2 -
I am going to see where I am at when I get there. In the long run I suspect I will want to be around 180-190, but the final 30 pounds or more may be a very long term process.1
