So what if I don't work the heck out of my biceps (for example) today. Can I go back to the gym tomorrow and work them more? Any harm done there?

I would talk to a personal trainor or the owner of your gym with that question. However from my stand point I would wait 24 hours before working out the same mucles again. I do upperbody on Mondays and Thursdays . We take the day off from the gym on Wednesdays

Today was, in my opinion, minimal effort because there were a good amount of people in the gym and I didn't do as much as I normally would.

Don't be surprised if you have reduced strength tomorrow. Even a relatively light weight session can cause enough fatigue to throw you off the next day. Just don't injure yourself.

We use lots of our muscles every day and some of them barely rest (I.e. heart). They end up OK. If you've done a set of reps to your capacity however you don't get extra credit to repeat the exertion the next day. All you've done is lose a muscle building day (rest day).

Thanks everyone. I'll give them a rest :)

Depends on goals and game plans.

Average just training to get stronger and preserve muscle mass? I'd rest.

I can and will bench heavy two days in a row. But only for specific purposes at specific times. Like yesterday and today. Hit 94% of my max for repeated singles yesterday, and was scheduled for deads today and bench tomorrow. However my coach and I decided that switching it up and benching today would be better. Because we needed my body to absolutely hit the wall. Absolute max effort so that over the next two weeks my nervous system and everything else will supercompensate and I'll be at absolute max strength for the platform.

So here's what I do. I do one day of strength training where I hit the a muscle hard, in this case my bicep. Then the next day, I'll come back and do an anabolic workout on it. I don't want to use weights, but I want to bring blood back into the muscle to encourage growth and repair from the previous day. So I use bands when I do this, curls or hammer curls work great. I do anabolic for all my muscle groups in between my strength training sessions and I have seen some great improvements in my overall workouts and gains. Hope this helps!

Forget personal trainers and stop reading those stupid steroid body promoted magazines. Muscles take 4-7 days to recover from a workout, and anything sooner will cause over training. I lift three days a week with one muscle group per week. Usually two exercises per body group, but always do the core lifts of deadlift, bench, military and squat every week. Go heavy with 3 sets of 4-6 reps after a couple of light weight warmups. When you can do 6 reps with a weight, go up in weight. I watch people look almost exactly the same in 6 months of doing supersets/muscle confusion over training workouts, and they always ask me why I keep building and going up on weight.

Outside of lifting, muscle is built in the kitchen and so are 6-pack abs.
