I want to gain more muscle in my legs and get a bigger butt. I dont have access to a gym right now and I have tried squats but theu just dont work for me. Maybe I'm just not doing enough of them. Any recommendations on what exercises I should do?

Gaining muscle happens with progressive resistance and calorie surplus. Doing lots of squats with just body weight won't attain this. But you can try one legged squats (pistol squats) until you're used to them. Then you'd have to increase resistance again.

As ninenerbuff mentioned above, you need a progressive program and stick with it while at a calories surplus. Take a look at Stronglifts, Starting Strength, and Strong Curves. Make sure your calorie surplus is modest to avoid gaining too much fat. Perhaps start with only 200-250 calories over your estimated TDEE and adjust from there.
