I started my diet 3 weeks ago today, eating 1200 calories and eating pretty healthy. The first week I lost 7 pounds! But week 2 and 3 I I've only lost 3.. I don't understand. It is making me become discouraged and makes me want to give up like I'm doing all this work for nothing.

Don't get discouraged! 3 lbs a week is awesome! It all adds up over time and soon you'll begin to notice it. Keep up the good work!2

You are about to get a flurry of messages that will tell you your expectations are unrealistic.
Much of the first week loss is water. You cannot expect to maintain that. A healthy rate of weight loss is around 1-2 pounds per/week depending on how much a person needs to lose. Losing faster than that will likely result in your losing muscle and not fat. If you continue to lose at the 3 pounds/week rate you should increase your calories ~500 per/day or more.
Losing more slowly has more benefits than just health. Your program will be easier to follow; so you will be more likely to stick with it. Your diet will also be closer to what your maintenance diet is going to be, helping you to develop good habits.
Good luck.12 -
A few things.
1. Water weight can make a huge difference so the first week some of that could have been water weight, like wise water weight can make the scale reflect a higher weight even though you may have lost some fat.
2. What is your goal set at? 2 pounds a week is typically the highest rate you want to lose at unless you have a lot to lose. Part of that is because any more and you'll lose a lot of muscle. Another reason is because when you create a huge deficit you really have to limit what you eat which may can cause you to burn out. On the flip side if you approach it slowly you won't need to make many changes to your diet and it's easier to stick with.
3. I think you have unrealistic expectations. Weight loss is a slow process not a fast one, if you are losing half a pound or more a week be happy that's good progress.
4. Finally do you use a food scale? The more accurate you are with your food tracking the more consistent the weight loss will be.1 -
seriously? In three weeks you've either lost 10 or 13 pounds (couldn't tell if you meant 3 pound total combined for weeks 2-3, or 3 pounds each of those weeks). Thats an insanely quick amount of weight loss. If you are shorter (such as myself) even losing .5 a week on 1200 is sometimes fantastic. Also, weight loss is not linear. You are going to have weeks that you drop a lot, weeks where you drop a little, and weeks where you don't drop anything at all. I think you need to have some realistic expectations here. You did not put on all of your weight in 3 weeks. It certainly is not going to come off in 3 weeks either. Give it a few more weeks, and see what happens. If you stall out, it most likely means you are to accurately logging (weighing EVERYTHING, not going by printed amounts on label). So, give it a few more weeks, add up total lost by then and divide by number of weeks to get your average lost per week. I bet when you look at it that way, you will be pleasantly surprised at the amount.7

You're eating WAY too little if you're losing 3 lbs a week5

You're losing. What is there to be mad about?
If anything, you may be losing too quickly. How much do you have to lose total? You are about to get a flurry of messages that will tell you your expectations are unrealistic.

3 pounds is slow??
I've lost 9 pounds this YEAR lol... that's 18 weeks, so 0.50 pounds a week.7 -
Oh my goodness - you've lost a LOT in just a little period of time. Time to get some realistic expectations or you'll be in for a lot of disappointment!7

Change your mindset. Even 3lbs a week is quite a lot, probably a bit over what you should aim for - and will slow down. It's going to go to 2lbs a week, then 1lb a week, then 0.5. And that's fine! Weight loss slows the more you lose. You should aim to lose a little less to preserve muscle and minimise loose skin.2

3lbs a week is actually too fast, unless you are 300+ lbs.4

I believe she means she lost a total of 3 pounds for week 2 & 3. One and a half pounds a week is fantastic progress. You should be proud of your success. Keep it up!0

Oh, ONLY ten pounds in three weeks. What a terrible disaster. /sarcasm
Time to meet the REAL WORLD, rather than those stupid "reality" shows.3 -
Thank you for for those whose replies replies were helpful and positive. I'm new to this and trying to do this the right way. I am extremely proud of of those 10 lbs I was just not sure why it had had slowed down between week 2 and 3-but thank you for the advice and educating me in what is normal. Also, for those of you negative Nancy's, this should be a positive forum. .. If you can't say something nice don't say it at all.3

Wow, awesome weight loss! Don't get discouraged, just keep at it! 3 lbs a week is awesome. As many others have said, 1-2 pounds is awesome for most people so at 3 you're way ahead of the game! Also remember you have to watch if you lose weight too quickly that you are sacrificing muscle as well at too high a rate which will impact you negatively later on when your metabolism slows because of this. While weight is a great measure, sometimes the best measure is how we feel and how our clothes fit.0

I've been following this thread. Every one of those "negative nancys" was trying to help you. Either by helping bring to light that your expectations may be dragging you down or pointing out that your intake could be too low (your original post was confusing and you've refused to clarify for some reason). Choosing to perceive those posts as negative does not give you the right to start attacking people. And it certainly doesn't make me want to offer you any additional advice.13 -
I'd be freaking ecstatic if I lost 10 pounds in three weeks....1
-
So you are 3 weeks in and already down 10lbs? What's wrong with that? Your expectations are too high.
You won't lose massive amounts every week and you might have weeks that you lose nothing and that's normal.1 -

I agree with you that people are on these threads to help others find their way. I do, however, see a lot of people speak condescendingly towards others on the threads. I get it for those that have been on awhile there's tons of posts like these, but for the person who's posting the first time it's new info and sometimes would be received better if said in an encouraging tone rather than the way some things are worded. It's a great thing that people are working towards bettering their lives and getting healthy and the first time they reach out to people on similar journeys they can get their heads ripped off. Let's just remember that it may be the 1000th post we've read like this but it's their first;)0 -

I remember it every day that I'm on here and work hard to make my advice as topical, complete, and useful as possible. To the point that I've started threads asking how to make it better. But I'm sick to death of seeing new posters get frustrated and start attacking people because a few posts rubbed them the wrong way. It's driven a lot of useful posters away and caused others to retreat to the chit chat or debate forums instead.2 -
I don't don't think I attacked anyone... I thought saying 'negative nancy' would lighten it up. And I I didn't know what I didn't clarify? I'm still new using using this this app so I I don't quite understand it yet. I asked for help in understanding, embarrassed, but I did it. If u felt frustrated with me u didndidnot have to post on it. Promise it it will be the last time I ask for help. Thank you.0

You shouldn't feel embarrassed to ask for help. However, I would strongly suggest you read the stickied posts (Most Helpful Posts).
It's true the same questions get asked over and over again. It's also true that if those questions weren't asked you'd "hear" crickets in the forum. I still think one of the best ways to be introduced to this site is to read those stickies, then ask clarifying questions for those things you still don't understand. Now, some people want to jump right in and just ask questions. They have to realize they may sometimes get answers they don't appreciate.
Another thing the stickies may help you with, along with reading a lot of posts, is identifying which members know what they're talking about and which don't. There are far more people who will give crappy, nonsensical, and sometimes detrimental, advice than there are who give good advice. By reading the stickies and lots of posts, you can start identifying who they are. Unfortunately, as another poster mentioned, many of those people are no longer here, but there are still some hanging around. Those are the ones you want to listen to, even if you don't like what they have to say. And one day, after you learn more than you know now, you might be one of those people, too, and hang around to help new members learn.1 -
loosing consistantly is better then always loosing large amounts quickly0
