Back off the binge...

Hey Champs,

I started my war-against-weight (WaW) sometime in December of 2010. It began with my girlfriend signing me up for personal training sessions with a guy who has quite a good name around these parts, and who's sessions had transformed one of our dearest mates.
I started out with a fire which seemed to strengthen day by day. I was eating better, training harder, and going to gym almost every single day of the week. Within the first month I started seeing results - losing cm's and of course actually completing 10 consecutive push-ups was a big result for me.

It's been 6 months now, and my results have back tracked...I got lazy and unmotivated. I haven't been to a session in over a month now, and my eating has digressed to the point where I just don't care. ( I also had bronchitis for 2 weeks)...

I commence with the "new" regime today, and am starting my personal training sessions this evening...my question is - how does one maintain the goal? On days when it's tough, how do you stay focused?
I'm weighing 140kg's and just feel like I've failed so much...even though I'm recommencing the WaW, I just feel that I'm going to fail again...

Please would anyone here provide your ways or means of staying motivated...perhaps anybody who was in the same position I am currently in?

Thanks to all who reply...

Cheers

My favorite thing to say to people is that its a commitment and not so much about being motivated... I fall off the wagon on a daily basis but still continue to move forward. I am human and I will make mistakes but I am committed to moving forward. It a wonderful feeling when you get that drive and motivation but it does come and go.

Motivation comes and goes, but commitment is forever

you wont fail becuase this goal can only be accomplished by you. You are the only one that can do it. and youre the only one that can reap the benefits and get the praise you so deserve for being motivated and dedicated. the compliments will come to only you..no one else...you, .use the compliments you get to motivate yourself. everytime some one compliments you, write it down on a post it when you get home...stick it somewhere visible...on a mirror, a cupboard, the fridge, the front door so its the last thing you see b4 u go out of it to train. compliments are more addictive than sugar.

Go on. you can do it.

  • I know the feeling! I always start really motivated but get worn down to the point of not caring my way back to being unhappy.
I think it is just a matter of taking it slow and building up towards your goals instead of exhausting yourself early, at least that is what I have observed of the successful people on the forums here. They start slow and work their way up!

I wish I knew the answer for you...
  • Well done for getting back to it.

I keep myself motivated by not letting the 'off' days drag me down. Any time I slip, I remind myself I can get back into eating better and exercising more. Either ease yourself back in or go at it with enthusiasm, whatever works for you.

And the high you get from a good exercise session is fantastic motivation.

I started a similar time to you and have had times on and off the wagon. I blog to keep myself accountable, I talk about my weight loss with family and friends, I make sure that I'm accountable every day.

I remember how bad I felt at my heaviest and how I will feel when I'm at my goal.

It's always a slow miserable process trying to lose weight, but there's nothing like hanging in there and getting a result. Stick with it!!! Also I love the expression WAW, I'm stealing it!!! xx

If you expect yourself to fail, you will. If you expect to win the war, you will. There will be small battles along the way that you may loose, learn from them, and refocus on winning the war. Keep at it.

I'm the worst at this. If you look at my diary since starting up again in February, my weight tracking is just a constant down and then a bit back up, and then down and back up again. The problem is that when I do my exercise and eating well I go so hell for leather than when i fall off the wagon, I fall massively and do it for about a week or two and put on around 6-7lbs.

I need to do it moderation really, but I'm a bit all or nothing sadly.
