Did you tell your doctor about your diet?

What are we debating? Dietary cholesterol effecting blood cholesterol levels? High fat diet vs cholesterol? (there is already a post here about that)
What component is measured as 7.4?

I'm not an expert or anything - just someone who has a history or high cholesterol and had been on a statin for a dozen years. I try super hard to follow Dr. Esselstyn's "Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease" book - plant based string diet. It only took m2 a couple months to hear from my Dr. I no longer need the RX! And the weight loss - not what I was trying to achieve - was an amazing bonus. So...no eggs. No meat - no oils. He recommends a plant perfect diet but with 6 kids and 6 grandkids - it's tough so I try to eat healthy during the week when no kids are around!! Good luck to you!

Yep. They're going to tell you to change your diet first. If that doesn't work you'll need to be put on statins.

Kiss that high fat diet goodbye.

Go to eatingacadamy.com and read up on cholesterol. If you're really concerned, ask to determine your lipoprotein size distribution. It's the ratio of -P and -C as well as lipoprotein size that really matters. Routine essay on cholesterol concentration is a very incomplete picture at best. And, food intake has very little to do with it.

There is no evidence that lowering cholesterol improves cardiovascular health. Statistically the risk of fatal heart attack remains constant with or without statin drugs. Your brain is made of fat, your body needs more fat/cholesterol circulating to keep your brain healthy as you age. In my opinion the use of cholesterol lowering protocols is likely the root cause of the increased rate of brain degeneration in the elderly. Your doctor has been trained to believe that your number must fit in a box - fitting your number in the box does not guarantee improved health. Do your own research, it's your body.

That sounds like the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol (given that other cholesterol-related stats are are almost always at least in the double digits, and often in the triple digits).

The total cholesterol is something over 100, usually. The Ratio of total cholesterol/HDL typically gives a 1 or 2 digit number. For instance good HDL is 40. My total cholesterol is about 170. My HDL is 39. My ratio is 4.4. A good Ratio number is below 5. There are two ways to make the ratio go down. You can reduce total cholesterol with diet and exercise, or you can increase HDL with diet and exercise. This matters in the context of inflammation. LDL collects at the site of broken tissue in the blood vessels when high blood pressure causes the vessels to crack. LDL overdoes its thing and can harden into plaques and blockages. HDL comes along after LDL and cleans up the mess that LDL makes. You can keep your blood pressure in control, reducing inflammation, with diet and exercise.

    Notice a trend?

Thanks a million for interesting answers and advice. Found on internet that stay still low carb but give up cafe with coconut oil in the morning should low my cholesterol..I will try that as well but I don`t think that is so simple after all your posts because that topic looks far more complicated. I want stay away from drugs as long as possible as I take even paracetamol very rare:) Have appointment for next week to find out what my HDL and LDL exactly is.I`m exercising every day and with good weather now (hurray because I live in Ireland) jogging every evening. Going to Poland next week for 10 days and I`m gonna to do my blod tests more advanced..

A non-fasted test could show up all sorts of weirdo results, especially if you injested coconut oil ahead of the sample. Make sure its fasted next time and concentrate on the ratios Total/HDL and Triglycerides/HDL.

Note to Americans - other parts of the world report cholesterol in mmol/l which is where the 7.4 came from.

There is no evidence to support use of statins in women.

Yes ... and Drs prefer you to be under 5. 7.4 is quite high.

When mine hit 5.6, my Dr strongly suggested losing at least 10 kg to see if that would lower it back under 5. I did ... and it did.

    Fast for the test.
I would absolutely never go on a statin,There is a lot of sloppy evidence and big drug company money behind the drug pushing.

Cholesterol converter says 7.4mmol/l is about 286mg/dl. That's exactly what mine was when I was doing low carb, high fat paleo. I was always using oil (olive) when cooking, eating lots of eggs, chicken and full fat dairy. I've changed my diet to low fat, high carb, mostly plant foods, less meat, eggs and cheese. My last test 9 months ago was down to 168 mg/dl which would be about 4.3mmol/l. The difference in weight was only about 10 lbs less so I think the high fat diet was the problem.
