CHIPS AND SALSA?

What's a good alternative? Its one of the staples at my house and I just can't let go of this snack

You say you can't let go of it. Do you want to, or not? You could eat less chips. Otherwise, dip some cucumbers in the salsa.

It's not a bad snack? Just eat less.

I personally can't have tortilla chips in the house. Just not a thing I can control. I was okay with popcorn though. I liked to air pop it in a brown bag in the microwave and add chipotle sauce and nutritional yeast. Way more volume for the calories.

You could try homemade sweet potato chips with olive-oil and sea salt in the oven, and you could make your own Salsa to make it even healthier.

I toast the 100 calorie flour tortillas and break them up to eat with salsa.

Me too. Once I eat one, it's a battle to stop!

Make room for it. OR, make your own with a low calorie tortilla. For example, take a 50-80 calorie tortilla, cut it up into pieces, spray with cooking spray and add salt or seasoning, bake in the oven, flip once, bake more, they crisp up like chips. Serve with salsa. Low calorie treat. You can even have two tortillas and salsa for <200 calories which makes quite a bit of chips. :)

Ditto. I overindulge in them at a party and mexican restaurants even though I have a bad reaction to the high carbs (I call it carb pain, no one knows what it is). They're just so good :(

When I first started MFP, as an alternative to my former nightly nachos I used thinly sliced cucumbers with my usual salsa and yogurt-sriracha dip. I called it 'sad nachos.'

Lol I can soo relate to this. I used to do the same when I did weight watchers years ago except I used sliced red peppers...it really wasn't nachos...

Buy corn tortillas, cut them into strips, sprinkle lightly with salt, bake at 200 F for 15-20 minutes. Salsa is cheap calorie wise. Three tortillas is about 150 calories and makes quite a few chips.

I like to read cookbooks for fun and a raw vegan one suggested using romaine leaves as chips. You wouldn't miss chips at all! I tried it and it was even worse than my usual sad nachos D:

I love salsa with 2 or 3 servings of Special K cracker chips. Cuts the craving like no other.

Sometimes I cut up cubes of cheese and it's dinner.

"Beanitos" chips are good and a bit more nutritious than regular chips. About the same calories but a little more protein and fiber. Have as much salsa as you like if you're not restricting sodium! I like scrambled eggs with a little cheese, salsa, and pickled jalapeño as a good nacho substitute as well!

I second the vote on Special K cracker chips. For salsa dipping, the Sea Salt flavor goes well.

Use the salsa on other things. I use it on top of red snapper fish. I use it on top of 99% lean ground lean ground turkey and make burrito bowls. I put it on top of salads. I think you get the picture. For me it's about the taste of the salsa. I can't control myself with the chips and salsa.

Why did I never think of doing this?!?!?!

I eat chips and salsa all of the time. I give myself a serving that is appropriate for me...I don't just eat out of the bag or dump the whole bag into a bowl...portion control.

Portion out how many servings of the chips you want and put them in a large bowl and crush them a bit. Then dump some Pico in it instead of the wet salsa. Then chop up a whole head of romaine lettuce and dump that in for more crunch.

Drizzle some Cholula or hot sauce of your choice and stir it up.

Eat it with a big spoon and crunch your cravings away.

This is a good idea. I did it with pork rinds recently. This would work well for me though, thanks!

Well, of course, you must not banish chips and salsa from your house. I don't know what you have in Washington but you may be able to find authentic salsa which has zero added sugar of any kind. The salsa which includes sugar is just candy. My Clint's Texas Hot Salsa notes that it is "No Sugar. Low Sodium. Gluten Free." What's not to love about that? The issue to address is the chips. One serving is 1 oz, about 8 or so chips. It still counts as a serving of bread. If you are controlling for bread in your food plan, that's to be counted against your budget. There may exist somewhere a gluten-free tortilla-wannabe, but I don't know if you care for that topic.

Dish out 5 spoon full of salsa into a dish and count out 20 tortilla chips and put the bag away. Sometimes this will be a snack I take to work. It's a nice treat

Same! I weighed out my salsa and my chips, and even the guacamole (more than I expected!!). You could always get them from a restaurant and weigh them so you only buy a small portion at once.
