Those of you with Thyroid related weight problems.. What made you THINK it could be your thyroid and what happened to make you have it checked? I don't THINK I have any of the symptoms of any thyroid problems.. but I think I might wanna go to a doctor, and have everything checked, I'm just so scared of how judgemental they will be.. My Gyno is AWFUL and I HATE her bc she makes me feel like ****... Also, what other weight related issues should I look for. I just get so discourged sometimes and feel like I've done so good and exercised then get on the scale to only see a GAIN!

I went to the doctor after I gained 80 pounds in 4 months. I could hardly get out of bed, because I had constant fatigue, my body always ached and I could tell it wasn't because of my Lupus but something else, and my hair started falling out. Turns out, my thyroid levels were off the charts bad when the doctor checked me for it. I'd never heard of thyroid issues, my doc was the one who brought it up when I came in with my symptoms.0

I was cold all the time, dry skin, dry hair, hair loss but no weight related problems. Had surgery to remove 1/2 my thyroid and a golf-ball sized tumor in March ... since then my weight loss has stalled...still seeing the Dr because my bloodwork looks normal BUT i am still cold all the time, even in my office which is around 84 degrees.0

Find another doctor!! Ask a friend or go to healthgrades.com or vitals.com or yelp.com and find reviews of doctors.
A good doctor will hold you accountable for your health habits and remind you of what you can do to be healthy, but they shouldn't make you feel bad about it!!0 -
Went in for a check up when I was 15. They called my mom and told her I had the thyroid problems. Not sure what triggered the test. Now...30 years later....it still causes me problems.0

i didnt specifically go to get my thyroid checked, but for months i was always unwell, tired, aching, feeling really low. i could sleep for ages and i would still wake up tired and 'sore' and i would/still have constant headaches.
so because of all that i went to my doctor to see what was wrong with me, and she took some blood tests and it came back that i have an under active thyroid.
most people get their thyroid levels checked every 3 months at first then every 6. but for my i was getting them checked about ever 5-6 weeks, and apparently now i have the correct dosage.0 -

Mine was found when I went for my physical. My doctor requested for me to get blood work. Found out that I have an under active Thyroid. It also runs in my family.0

Some type of insulin resistance like PCOS or type 2 diabetes. People with PCOS are more sensitive to carbs, causing much greater spikes in blood sugar causing the body to store fat in the stomach area. Some of the symptoms are acne, darker hair on face and body, dark patches ( if you have these you will know what I am talking about), hair loss, and irregular, extremely painful periods. A huge majority of overweight women have PCOS and this is why low carb diets have become popular.0

Thyroid problems run in my family, but my family always had hyperactive, mine was hypoactive, so I thought I was just fat and lazy. I FINALLY found a doctor that would listen to me and tested me and guess what it was hypo....So many things have changed for me, but most importantly my attitude, I was a total b**** before, now I am better.....
Signs for me are/were:
hairloss
dry skin
brittle nails
constipation
lethargic ( I could sleep anytime, anywhere)
Good luck!!!!0 -
My thyroid was initially checked because of extreme fatigue and hair loss. I will be honest in saying that the myth about "thyroid meds causing weight loss" is in fact not true. Thyroid meds have had little to no effect on my weight loss, but have helped a ton with many of the other symptoms mentioned in previous posts. In order for thyroid meds to cause weight loss a person would actually be over medicated which would result in hyperthyroidism which is just if not more serious then an under active thyroid. It is also important to get tested from a doctor who is educated on the newest standards for thyroid levels (new "normal" lab standards were put in place as of February 2010). Many doctors do not treat if your lab results come back with in the "normal" TSH range of approximately 0.5 to 5.0, however optimal TSH levels should be as close to one as possible without going under 0.5 (hypo).0
