Getting more potassium?

Options
What can I do to get more potassium in my diet? I know bananas are usually the go-to food for that, but plain bananas make me feel sick. Are there any foods or supplements you would recommend?

    My dad has been battling low potassium because of chemo treatments. If yours is really low then you need a supplement in a pill or something, I was told this when I jokingly suggested to expedite his potassium transfusion I get him a banana from the cafeteria. Anyway, sweet potatoes are super high, white potatoes--eat the skin, squash, spinach, tomato sauce., dark leafy greens like chard, beets. Sounds like kind of yummy food really.

    One thing to know:
    Look at a can of beans.
    You'll notice potassium is not on the label.
    And as you know, beans are loaded with potassium.
    If it is not on the label this site has no way of picking up the information.
    Therefore you could be getting enough potassium and not know it.
    I had to find a skim milk entry that included potassium (hard to do).

    IF you are really worried about potassium, do what I do:
    Reduce your sodium so it is a 1:1 ratio (open diary).
    Ex: 2,000 mg sodium and 2,000 mg potassium. Keep sodium lower.
    You may have to track potassium on paper since this site does not catch them.

    My skim milk did not have potassium on the label (not showing on this potassium on site).
    I found another entry that had it and use that.
    Did you know coffee and tea have potassium (not on labels).

    I focus on magnesium for healthy bones.
    With enough magnesium rich foods, I do not have to track potassium.

    Potassium supplements are extremely dangerous.
    Perhaps one of the most dangerous supplements out there.
    There is a reason they only sell them at 90 mg unless prescription.

    You are probably getting enough potassium. :)
    Potassium is not on many of our food labels-- the US gov does not require it on packaging.

    As mentioned above, potassium is not included for many of the listing on MFP. If you include "USDA" in your food search, you will usually get better results. For example, "USDA black beans". Most of these listings include potassium amounts. You can also go to the USDA website and search individual foods and then create your own listing on MFP. I was concerned about not getting enough potassium myself and started to do this. Once I made sure all of the listings I was using had the potassium amount included I found that I was getting close to the RDA.
