Hi Mae, I'm new to this forum too! I've joined because I too am classed as obese and am just starting to get close to being diagnosed with diabetes (& as a Dr I should know better!). I've never had a good relationship with food and as the mum of two teenagers I am really scared of messing with their heads over it. I've been doing Herbalife (2 meal replacements in the day & 1 meal at night with the family). So far I've lost 6lbs but have 72 more to go before I hit a normal BMI! It feels like miles away. I don't really want to talk about it to my family or work colleagues so am looking for an understanding companion to share the path with. Sally0

Hi Sally
pleased to met you , I would agree with your comment that as a doctor you should no better but I won't as I don't think getting diabetes really enters our heads , I could say I should have knowen better too considering both my brother and mother have diabetes and having had gestional diabetes myself then I was a high risk from the word go
but that is life ... I too have never had a proper relationship with food, always chose to eat what I wanted , when I wanted and being slim up until my late 20's meant I could do just that , it was getting Osteoarthritis that slowed down my activity levels and the weight increased
I,m now at the stage where I struggle to do most things and having M.E certainly doesn't help , I am just trying. To cut out the junk I used to eat , I have thought about going on a liquid diet but that wouldn't suit me , I like food lol plus being diabetic means I have to eat in order for the tablets to work , I don't bother telling my family my struggles , I have a teenage son who's overweight too but he's a finicky eater ... I don't even no what a normal BM is ... Mae

Hi Mae, goodness with ME on top of everything you must really be having a hard time.
I find the Herbalife suits me as I'm so busy during the day that I can distract myself it's the evenings when I eat so leaving the majority of calories until then keeps them down. I have never been thin! I was the fat kid that everyone told would lose their "puppy fat" when puberty came. Sadly I still have the puppy fat & I'm too close to being an old dog for comfort!!0 -
I can say it's certainly not been easy , my main problem is changing the way I think regarding food , I've been to dietitians and health trainers but in reality I no what I,m meant to be eating and no one can tell me what to eat but me , I,m a adult I,m not stupid and unless I can get it inside my head then I,m not going to lose weight
, I feel older than my years constantly tired and in pain , I,m unable to work so have to much time on my hands , I have my partner and son but am isolated , struggling to make friends and my family are 100's miles away , I do suffer from depression too , I,m a right case hehe but I get by , I rescued an 4 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier last year, so walking him as helped me get out ... I was a slim, child, teenager and young adult , I remember feeling 'fat' when I was in a size 12 clothing ohh I wish to be that size again I certainly wouldn't moan now .. My BM is around 39.6 , its come down it was 42.9 I,m hoping it'll come down more , i,m realistic I no I,m never gonna be the weight I was as a young adult , ... I,m sure your not an old dog but I guess like me your kinda stuck in a rut? Knowing what you have to do but lacking the motivation
the thought of forever being on a diet horrifies me but I no it's something I face and I'm. Not looking forward to it, I,m already struggling with what to eat , lettuce, beetroot, cucumber, carrot, spring onion gets boring ...

I know the depth of that rut! It sometimes feels like you can't even see out of it let alone get out of it. I hate being hungry and I bloody hate salad! I don't think I deserve this, I'm a good person and am surrounded by pretty young things that seem to guzzle cakes & biscuits at work and still be bloody bean poles!0

That's really annoying as I wrote tons after that and it has all gone from the end of the post!!!0

So I bought a self hypnosis tape (which does seem to be helping), wrote a list of why I want to be thinner and started to log EVERYTHING I eat. Boy was that a hard lesson.
I think it's about finding a change in my head that stops seeing this as punishing myself for being fat but caring about myself by trying to be thin.1 -
Sorry didn't see your reply until now
, I joined mfp to see what I was eating and it's a shock to see how much 'junk' I actually consume
... I hate being hungry all the time too , starting to hate the sight of salad stuff , but have found that when I eat different food my sugar levels rise
there seems to be no end .

Hi Mae, how's it going? I am feeling a bit guilty as the weekend turned into something of a splurge and boy did the calorie counter on mfp show it! I was quite tempted not to enter it but I did and so I have it in full glorious tragic detail!!
Time to get back on the wagon I think. Good news is asparagus is in season so less salad!!
Tuesday night is my night in the hospital though so I need to find the strength to avoid the cakes/chocs/biscuits at 3am when the tiredness strikes.
As a diabetic have you tried increasing your protein consumption in order to reduce the hunger? I find it helps. The problem is calorie wise you seem to be getting less food if it's high in protein but it pays dividends in terms of reducing the appetite. I try not to eat bread, pasta & potatoes. When I manage it the hunger levels do drop. But it's a real effort!
Anyway, keep up the efforts and I will try to do so alongside you. S0
