Getting and STAYING motivated

So for the past year now, off and on I've been trying to get healthier, lose some pounds, ect. For a week I will do great, then the motivation is gone, I sink back into my unhealthy lifestyle. Any suggestions on how to keep it going?
I want to get back to running often, as I used to play soccer, and I miss it so much. But Lord knows this lard can't run for more than 5 minutes now a days.
Not that I am big, I'm just way out of shape.

You might want to try taking small steps to getting healthier. For instance, challenge yourself to walk a few days a week instead of doing an intense workout regime right away or find ways to make your favorite foods healthier.

Another thing I've found helpful is group fitness classes if you have a gym membership. They're free at my gym and I go to a few a week. Usually I see the same people and I get to know the instructor and that adds a little accountability for me.

My weakness is dr. Pepper. I don't drink any other sodas, and some weeks I can drink very little dr. Pepper and go crazy with smart water (boy do I love smart water) but I always end up going back to dr.pepper. It makes it so much worse that all the healthy foods and drinks are MUCH more expensive than unhealthy processes foods.

Go with the diet dr. Pepper, of all the diet sodas dr. Pepper is closest in taste. I don't know that much about smart water but if you're worried about the cost just drink regular tap water or bottled water probably a lot lot cheaper.

Healthy eating doesn't have to be more expensive than junk food. I don't know if you're buying quote and quote healthy Market is food but that's more expensive.

To continue I cut myself off and posted by mistake before I finished. Like I said healthy eating doesn't have to be more expensive a pound of apples or pears is a lot cheaper than a bag of potato chips. A pound of chicken probably cost less than one McDonald's Quarter Pounder with cheese.

As far as the exercise like some other posters said starts slow simple goals maybe a walk and you'll build up stamina also if you just follow the calorie and calorie out it'll work fine you will lose the weight good luck in your journey.

One last thing the motivation has to come from within no one can motivate you or push you and it has to be a totally selfish reason something that gets you going every day

I really like this old topic from the Motivation and Support forum here: The Myth of Motivation (and what you need instead)

This has been me for the past couple of years and I am lucky if I make a week. The last time I did MFP I found that making friends helps and that is why I am back. Forty6and2 I think you have a great idea of small steps and a few days at a time rather than the bigger picture and that is what I am going to do. I am going to try and do as many good days as I can but not give up if I have a bad day, which is what I keep doing. Don't know how many Mondays I have restarted. Steve I agree motivation must come from within and maybe I need to be more selfish, but I do need help to focus I suppose. No more excuses though.
