So after waiting a week to weight myself because of TOM, i stepped on the scale and was horrified. Im so unbelievably disappointed right now. I feel like crying and giving up because If im not going to lose weight why the *kitten* am i even doing this??? How many days does it take for the water weight to go away?

If you've been tracking calories the same as you have been and haven't binged too much, don't get so worried about the number on the scale. It takes a few days for my water weight to go away.2

I have been counting calories constantly, i log everything. I hope youre right because this is heartbreaking.0

I would also suggest weighing in during TOM, just so you can get an accurate picture of how much water weight you gain, so that you can truly figure out how long it takes for your body to return to "normal". Since you have no idea how much your weight went up from water weight, you don't have an accurate picture3

When did your period actually end? It varies greatly from person to person when they lose the water weight.
It even varies from month to month for me! Sometimes I put on a large amount of water weight and it'll stay there for ~10 days, others I barely notice any gain.
Give it a little bit of time.1 -
Thank-you for these comments, its very reassuring. I was under the impression that the weight went away when your period did. Mine just ended today which is why i weighed myself thinking that it would be gone.0

I don't just bloat and gain water around the menses, I also retain water and bloat around ovulation which is really twice a month. Perhaps most women do not do this and it may be age, but I can retain up 5 pounds. I stopped looking at a static number and use a weight range.
You should keep up with weight trends all during the month, sodium in take, how many carbs you consume, exercise changes like intensity and what not because all of these things have an impact on water weight.
Up the water during any times described above, or just drink more water in general everyday.
I would take the thoughts of water weight as being a bad thing, but part of a women's biological makeup and just part of the physical body.0 -

I usually get bloaty before and start losing water during. It goes to show that everyone has different experiences and not to sweat it too much. If you are logging accurately then just keep your head up0

When did your period END?
Mine look(ed) like this:
Two days before bleed scale went up 3-5 pounds.
One ish day after bleeding ended, scale went down 3-5pounds or more if I was dieting
on day 12 from the first day of bleed, scale went up 3-5 pounds with ovulation.
Have you waited long enough that you may be ovulating?
Are you on hormonal BC?1 -
Thank you for the advice everyone. And to those asking: no binging happened and i was under my calorie goal every single day. I use a food scale and measuring cups/spoons so i know everything is accurate3

Usually my period gain is gone by the week after my period ends not the day my period ends.
It will go away.0 -

ok. I just feel like "binging" as a word gets thrown around a lot on here, and wonder if folks really mean BINGE, or just eat a bit more. Especially when you add "too much".1 -
I like the Happy Scale app where I weigh daily and log in there and it graphs it for you. If you log it daily after a couple months you'll have a good idea of when your body holds water weight. Instead of freaking out about the little ups (we all have some up and down due to many factors) just try to think of it as getting data to see how your body reacts to different things like TOM, salty meals, exercise etc:)1

Agree with getting a weight trend app. I use Trendweight on my PC.
I also downloaded a "period app" which tells me when i'm ovulating and when my period is expected to start and stop. It's just a bit of extra interesting info.0 -
Mines like a couple days in. Then by the time it's over I'm my lowest weight of the month..its great. .then comes ovulation and I hold water then also! So annoying.1

These feelings are why I stopped weighing in. I know the calories I eat are enough to be losing some amount of fat each week, it's definitely low enough. So if I stick to it, I AM losing. I'm tracking just measurements now and feeling so much better. I got just as emotional and felt like giving up every time the scale wasn't where I wanted. Basically, the lack of results kept me from even trying and what's the point of that right?
I know it's hard, but if you ditch the scale and just decide to stick to that calorie goal like it's your job you will lose. I love tracking my inches, I automatically know it takes a long time so only check every month. I will likely break the scale out in about a month from now to check in and see how quickly I'm losing, but I am losing because I am being accurate in my logging and sticking to my calorie goal. Let that be your success for now.1 -

For me, normal calories would be around 1,500. Binging but not "too much" would be around 2,000. Flat out binging would be around 5,000. Without initially knowing if she had kept to her plans and not gone over, there was no way to know if the weight was just water, so it covered all the bases.0 -

okay. I saw nothing in her post that suggested she had disordered eating. Thanks for the reply.0
