Weight gain whilst exercising

Hi
I have gained 5lbs and have been exercising by doing 3 Yoga Classes a week and walking around 40 minutes a day. My tops actually feel tighter so I know I have not lost size. I'm so disappointed. I might have been drinking more wine and eating more carbs in the evening lately but surely that can't be it?
I don't understand this? Any advice?

I think this could be it. Perhaps you've eaten and drunk more than you think?2 -
Are you tracking your calories accurately? You can drink wine and eat carbs in the evening as long as you are within your calorie goals. Also, are you adding all the calories MFP gives you for your yoga and walks? MFP is notorious for over estimating calorie burns. A lot people add 1/2 of what MFP gives them for exercise.2

Start tracking the wine and carbs.
The exercise might be making you feel more hungry or subconsciously you think you can eat just a bit more because you worked out...
Unfortunately the calories add up quickly, so start tracking your food better. You are gaining because you aren't in a deficit.2 -
Since your level of activity isn't enough to assume it was even possible to gain muscle mass I would say you probably ate more than you think. You should eliminate guessing by weighing and logging everything you eat. Alcohol and snacking add up calories quite fast. Logging should be an eye opener. Weight loss comes down to simple math...calories in, calories out... put your stats into MFP and your desired weight loss per week and you will be given calorie allowance per day. If you stick to it, you will lose weight. Good luck2

This could definitely be it...if you're not in a deficit, you'll gain weight.
Or, if this exercise routine is new you could be retaining a little water.1 -
I use MFP! It works well but you need to have a 400-600 deficit after working out to see results. I've lost 12lbs in 10 days. Also make sure you're getting enough cardio in. Like cardio that takes your breath away and makes you want to quit. I love yoga and it's great for flexibility & stamina but doesn't burn fat!!1

Look up how many calories those snacks and wine have.
That's totally it.
Log your food, eat at a deficit.3 -
OP, the amount and type of exercise you're doing is just fine. Throughout most of weight loss, I did a lot of walking, too. No need to change any of it unless you want to.
I agree with the majority of the responses saying you're eating more than you think. As an experiment, try eating exactly how you would normally eat, but weigh everything on a food scale and log every single bit of it for one week. You might be amazed by how much you're consuming. It's very educational, to say the least!

Thanks guys! I will add some cardio and track what I eat and report back! As I have only been doing yoga and little cardio I probably haven't burnt fat.
Thanks for support and advice.

OP, are you tracking the carbs and wine you drink at night along with the rest of your daily calories or do you leave this evening wine drinking and carb eating off the diary?0 -

No exercises 'burn fat'...calorie deficit is only thing that works for weight loss. Exercise is awesome and healthy and all that but it is not needed for weight loss! Sure it's awesome way to increase the calorie deficit so you lose faster or have extra calories to eat...but that's just about it. Exercise doesn't 'burn fat' which is a main reason we can't spot reduce fat.1 -
You don't get to know what you don't record. Record all, even the overages, then when you look back at your diary you will see why your shirt is tighter.1

Less winin', more loggin'. Also what's up with whilst, that's not even a word I don't think.0

I've been logging all of my food whilst I've been losing weight.
I had a cup of coffee whilst waiting for my friend.
Ofcourse it's a word. More commonly used here in Aus, and England.

Keep a closer eye on calories in, you'll find that is more likely to be the issue than any exercise you are doing causing the gain.0

and regarding the word whilst... Its not used so much I suppose now but its certainly in the English language. Its another of these words that the younger generation don't seem to use, our language is constantly evolving and not always in a good way.1
