Some people need snacks, some don't. If you need a snack, have one. Just record everything you eat in your food diary and try to stay within your daily caloric goals.

Some of my fav snacks are fruit, an occasional granola bar, and beef jerky (especially before heading to the gym).

P.S. Boyfriend is NOT correct about no snacks ever. Different people, different metabolisms. Remember, you're really trying to restructure your diet, not go ON a diet. Restrictive diets aren't sustainable... restructuring your diet is liveable.

Depends on you. I snack. Keeps my blood sugar regulated and keeps hunger at bay. Means smaller 'meals'. Doesn't bother me. Your body, your science experiment.

It helps to snack so your metabolism is constantly working, I don't know that you have to follow the 3 snacks a day because I don't all the time. I usually buy the 100 calorie packs from nabisco, or the 100 calorie popcorn all great snacks. I keep fruit in the fridge too all chopped up, papaya, watermelon, even strawberries to make it a topping for my yogurt with granola :)

I need snacks (I aim for 2) to get me though the day, it all depends on the person.

snacking keeps your metabolism running at a steady clip having healthy snacks (fresh veggies, a piece of fruit, some almonds) is how I survive between meals

There is no set number. In addition to what has already been said, some people feel they tend to be less likely to overeat on the regular meals because they don’t feel as hungry or starved. Feeling like you are gonna die if you don't eat isn't healthy and may lead to overeating. Which means one of the first way snacking is going to be effective is to adjust your regular meals. If you snack, your meals should be “smaller” or have less calories. Some think this will happen naturally if you don’t feel hungry but if you are eating the same for breakfast lunch and dinner AND snacking then it really isn’t for you. Second is to define snacks. They should be no more than about 100 calories and remember healthy eating includes snacks! So no candy and chips etc. Lastly to make snacking effective, you really have to chose the right foods at the right time. For example, if you have afternoon crashes maybe whole grain crackers with peanut butter. The carb protein combo will boost your energy.

While many folks swear by it, I personally don’t snack. I never adjusted my meals and tend to over eat for the day. I do have a very big breakfast which keeps me going for most of the day. So as with everything, try it and decide if it works best for you.
