How do you deal with a major slip? I should be at 1300 calories a day. Today, I went on a bratwurst and brownie splurge and came out almost 1000 calories over that. How do I get back on track, get over the guilt, and allow that it may happen again. Right now, I am not happy with myself.

If you are on a 2 pound per week weight loss goal, you have just eaten your deficit, not enough to put on fat. So set your mind at ease, do something active, and get back to it tomorrow.

Yes, we need to hold ourselves accountable in order to make a lifestyle change so the feeling you are experiencing now is normal.. I also have gone over 1300 calories today. for some reason I just wanted to eat eat eat. I am going to burn and extra 300 calories for the next five days to make up for it so it will teach me not to go overboard like that for a while. you are on the right track and hang in there!

One day wont ruin a whole diet. I always go with scheduling treat days so I dont go crazy. So just use the guilt that you went over as motivation to get back on it

Just make sure you eat right at the next meal and get a good workout in the next chance you get. These things happen, one day or one meal won't hurt you in the long run. It's going to happen. I remember when I first started working on losing weight I was almost perfect with my diet and then one night I had pizza and beer for dinner. At this point, I had a personal trainer who was looking at my food journal. I was upset and he told me not to be since it is not realistic that I will never eat pizza again. Work it into my lifestyle now while I am losing weight and I will be good. I don't eat pizza like I used to, but I still eat it here and there and going over my calorie goal occasionally happens and I am still doing ok....I've lost over 130 pounds. You are good!

It takes 3500 calories over/under normal base line caloric intake to gain/lose ONE pound. Today just means it will take a few more days to lose that pound. Don't beat your self up, just be more disciplined in the future.:)

Go for a walk, drink lots of water, log it in and move on. Those days are going to happen to everyone. The walk will help you feel less guilty (you shouldn't feel that way, but I understand!) and burn off some of those calories. The extra water will help flush your system and logging will help hold you accountable.

Tomorrow is another day! Good luck with it!

It depends what time of day it is where you live. If you have time to fit in a workout, that will decrease the effect and will probably make you feel better about going over.
If it is late at night, then put it behind you and plan a healthy eating and exercise day tomorrow and stick to it!
By other suggestion (and I'm trying to do this at the moment) is to work out WHY you ate so much. Hungry, tired, emotional, social??? Try to come up with a strategy for what you will do next time you are in this situation. This is easier said than done, but I think is a great way to work through the tough times.

easier said than done, but let it go, and start getting back on track..remember this for next time you want to over indulge..i have struggled with TRYING not to feel guilty, and tho i say i won't be, i usually do anyways. i had a buffet over the weekend for the first time in about 8 or 9 months, and i have allowed myself to not feel guilty..and it felt AMAZING. of course i had a 2.6 lb gain the next day, but i was ok with my decision..it's hard to do, but try to have self control, and it's ok to go over here and there..i think our bodies like that..best of luck

Drink lots of water, move on and start again tommorrow.....I've had some 4000+ calorie days and never let them stop me!

Just gotta keep going, we all slip up sometimes and in the grand scheme of things it really is a minor issue. Weight loss/maintaining is life long and a cheat only lasts as long as you let it!!!

We will never accomplish our goal if beat ourselves up! Start again tomorrow. Every day is a new start. I have had a rough time, but I've told myself I will at least log my food everyday whether I like what I see or not. If we see more good days than bad, our health will improve. I always think that I can go for a short walk if nothing else!

Don't let one bad day keep you down!
  • I did this a couple of weeks ago -- I was quite bloated (too much sodium) for a couple of days. I drank LOTS of water for the next couple of days, did lots of cardio. It took me 2 weeks for my weight to get back where it was! Don't beat yourself up about it, just get back to eating healthy and working out. And don't forget the water!

It's not the fact that you did this that will make you gain weight, it's not getting back on track tomorrow that will!

Also, sometimes having a high calorie day followed by low calorie days resets your metabolism and helps you lose! Don't do it all the time if course, but it can be beneficial

I wouldn't sweat it too much (no pun intended)... If you're burning, you can cheat once every week! It's recommended. Just don't go overboard.

Thanks to all for the encouragement. I put in some extra cardio today and hope things get back on track.
