I have been going to the gym mon-fri for about going on 4 weeks. I have lost a total of 5pds, i started at 230pds an now 225 i am 5'10 my eating is not the best yet but it has improved. Right now i am trying to figure out healthy foods i like but right now i have a green tea inthe morning with sweetner (i replaced the sweetner instead of sugar) a package of oatmeal a banana and a glass of water then go to the gym 30min after for about 1.5-2hrs . For lunch a greentea, banana ,maybe a small salad or bowl of veggies, and for dinner id have a salad, veggies, some bbq/grilled chicken. Iv usually been having stuff like that. But there are times when im to tired i will eat a patty,or some oven made fries or chicken nuggets. But my question is 1. Is 5 pds to little for the amount i been going to the gym? 2. Do i have to have a protein shake sometime in the day, before or after a workout?(like am i defeating the purpose of all this work) and 3. Are there any vitamins or such i should be taking? I always see people on instagram posting pics "todays supplements/vitamins" i feel so lost and confused, and i cant afford a trainer to inform me off all of this stuff.

Weight loss comes down to calorie deficit and that is it. Just going to the gym won't make you lose weight. Also-the type of food you eat, doesn't make you lose weight.1

You don't need supplements or exercise to lose weight.
The simplest way (in theory it's simple, some folks have trouble implementing it) is to buy a food scale, weigh and log all the food you eat accurately, and eat fewer calories than you burn overall over the day.1 -
CI<CO.
You do NOT need supplements, shakes, pills, whatever scamwoo junk you see being spruiked on instagram. 99% of it is just marketing scams.
5lbs in 4 weeks is good. Keep it up! If you want to be precise, a food scale is all you need. You can eat anything you want, as long as you stay within your calorie limit, yes, even your fries, nuggets and patty.1 -
yeah, it all comes down to calories. And I don't believe in the whole myfitnesspal thing where working out gives you more calories to eat during the day. It's very hard to actually determine calories burnt in a workout (machines lie to you). Just set a reasonable, healthy but somewhat restrictive calorie intake and don't go over it. Working out is for strength and toning, not weight loss.0

You don't need to bother with supplements, they don't aid weight loss.
Well done on losing 5lbs so far, it takes patience and time so keep up the great work.
Its already been said above to use a food scale - that really is the best advice. Its amazing how easy it is to eat more than we think we are.

What works for me is to not go over the macros set up with myfitnesspal and to walk 2-3 miles per day, I do not eat back my calories from exercise....when I stick to it, I have fabulous results! Eat less calories and the weight will come off....it takes time but I can successfully lose 1-2 lbs per week.0

I think a protein shake is actually a good idea, considering you're only consuming one protein source per day (according to your short description of your daily meals). A protein shake to *supplement* your protein intake is not a scam. It's not necessarily going to increase your weight loss, but you need more protein than one piece of chicken per day.
Also, what's your daily calorie goal? I can't imagine a couple of bananas, a couple of salads, some oatmeal, and one piece of chicken is enough for you at 225lbs AND working out five times per week. Weigh and log diligently. I haven't looked at your diary, but I'll go check it out if it's open. Are you honestly logging everything you eat?0
