Going to Vegas!

I'm going to Vegas at the end of this month for my best friends birthday.

This is super exciting for me for a couple reasons. One, I've never really been on a vacation (with the exception of New Mexico when I was 7 and Disneyland when I was 10). Both my parents had busy work schedules when I was young, and now that I'm older they are both retired/disabled and I take care of them. Second, it's freaking VEGAS! Third, I get some time to myself for the first time in a while. And finally, it will be my second flying experience EVER (that also freaks me out a little. HAHA).

Anyways, I've been trying to work out every day in anticipation for Vegas. Not only to look good, but also because of the alcohol and food that will be consumed.

My question for you all is should I even try to calorie count? I plan on giving myself that weekend off as far as my weight loss journey is concerned, but I will definitely still try to pick healthier options when it comes to food.

I think I'll be ok as far as getting back on the wagon goes, but any advice and/or suggestions?

All is appreciated!

Woo-hoo - Vegas here we come :drinker:
How exciting is that, oooh I'd be jumping for joy
In my opinion - for what it's worth, I'd go and have a fab time, yeah ok, so look for healthier alternatives by all means, but have A GREAT TIME, it's a one weekend event, don't worry too much.
One weekend will not kill your new healthier lifestyle, and you never know, you might surprise yourself.

    Have a GREAT time :flowerforyou:

Vegas is my favorite spot! So much to see and do! You'll get more exercise than you think just by walking everywhere. If you are staying on the strip, just walk up & down to visit the different casinos and sights. The food is excellent there. Try to avoid all the buffet lines - although there are not as many as there used to be. The food at the buffets is not as good as when you order off the menus - my opinion - so I always avoid them. I try to pick a different place to eat each time to have a variety. You're on vacation - I wouldn't count calories - just watch what you eat and
try not to clean your plate each time...

Where are you staying? Nights are chilly this time of year. And, the casinos are ALWAYS cold! Have a good time and I hope you win LOTS of money!!!

Vegas, baby. I go 4-6 times a year. I LOVE Vegas. I have to disagree with FloridaGranny about the buffets, though. The last year I have been staying at the North end of the strip and I like the buffets at the Mirage, TI, and ESPECIALLY (if there was a larger font, I would use it here......) at the Wynn. There are ten million different bee-you-teeeee-fulll desserts at Wynn. Alaskan King Crab legs (after 3PM - call first) every kind of beef, prime rib, fried chicken, homemade breads, mashed potatoes, every kind of potatoes for that matter, fish, on and on. Every vegetable known to man. Salads. Yummmm.
The buffets are reasonably priced - $22-$28 per person - doesn't include alcohol or tip. I usually eat one big buffet meal a day at around 3 or 4PM. Breakfast you can just grab something small - you won't get up till 11AM anyway, probably. Too much night-time fun!! Restaurants AND buffets close early during the week, like 10PM so be prepared for fast food or cafe food after 10 week nights.

If you want brunch - Bellagio. At least on the weekends. Trust me on this. About $24.

FLA Granny is right - there are tons of really good restaurants. Maybe too many! I think you need to get with your travelling partners before you go and go online and pick a few near where you plan to be, then go to their menus, and check out their websites. Then make reservations at a couple. They are very expensive - the good ones. And if you are going to Vegas, baby , EAT. Don't count cals. There is so much good food there. But if you don't make some choices before you go, you will run around like chickens with your heads cut off! It is a huge city, and you will walk 20 miles in two days. I always eat and eat and come back the same weight with all the walking. Take your most comfy shoes, and a coat, it will be cold.

You can take the "Deuce" for transportation if money is an issue. It is the double-decker bus that runs the length of the Strip. $2 per trip, or a $5 pass for the whole day. To walk the length of the Strip it will take you 3-4 hours if you only make a few stops - all day if you dally and go in every casino and lots of shopping. Shopping closes early during the week, too. There is a monorail, but it is inconveniently located at the rear of the casinos with a lot ot walking to and from. Expensive - like $12 per trip, $20 for a day pass, and you will waste a lot of time in the "bowels" of casinos. Not that much fun. There are taxis, and sharing a cab is the smart thing if there are several of you - about $25-30 from Mandalay to The Mirage ( 70% of the length of the Strip.)

I am trying to stay up all night to watch all the OBAMA stuff. I'll check my mail through the night and I started a thread in Chit-chat
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/36656-i-m-trying-to-stay-up-all-night-till-obama-s-house?page=1#posts-369071

So I'll be checking in there all night. Ask me anything about Vegas! I'm ready to go again and I was just there over Thanksgiving! Have FUN!!! Oh, you will. It's a freak show. I'm going to PM this to you, too.

First off have the best time of your life and try and leave the calorie count at home. You are there to have fun and enjoy. Yes the buffets are fabulous but also they do give you better choices on your food option then do the sit down resturants. Check out the older part of Las Vegas, that is pretty good also. Like the 4 queens ect.. There is more to las vegas then just the strip. There is also North Las Vegas and Henderson, and Hoover Dam

I decided not to worry on my vacation! This time was different though. I found myself wanting good foods and low fats and sodium. I had a great week and didnt gain an ounce!!

If you drink try for lower cal drinks. If you start with Jack and Coke you will crave the sugar when you come home!

Drink your water! It will help with other selections

Last of all HAVE FUN! You deserve to have a GREAT time! When you get home dont fret if the scale is up, especially if you drank alcohol. Just jump right back into your new lifestyle and drink lots and lots of water to flush out the bad stuff.

Next thing you know you will be posting 10 pounds lost!!

You are going to have such a great time! When we were there a few years ago, we went to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam and oh damn was my feet hurting  Alot of walking there and between the hotels (we opted to walk until it got to be wayy to much), found a few off the beat eateries and was able to get fairly decent food with a few drinks for approx $25-30. Other days we would stop and have a slice of pizza. I actually lost weight even though I drank more than usual, perhaps I was dehydrated or all the activities kept me going.

Check out a free show (one or two drink minimum) to save a few bucks, we loved them. :drinker:
