Tomorrow will be my first full day hike of the year and the snacks and lunches I use to bring won't work on the keto diet. I use to bring fruit of all kinds, sandwiches on whole grain bread and energy bars. Now I'm stuck as to what I can carry all day in a backpack....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I like the Quest bars as they have 6 net carbs (fiber doesn't count). I'd worry about the heat, though. Cheese sticks are cool too. Have fun!

A portioned out bag of nuts, jerky or pepperoni sticks (watch out for added sugar in the jerky), cucumbers with a fatty dip in a small container.

If you are going to be out all day, watch your electrolytes. Maybe bring a pickle or two to munch on. As you sweat, you may lose sodium.

I like EPIC bars. Grassfed/pasture-raised, and no added sugar. Really yummy!

Be sure to cover your electrolytes too. Maybe double up. My first big hike on Keto took a really big toll on me, got really dizzy. I now take some mineral salt in a gel capsule before any long hike, especially if the weather is hot. Makes a huge difference for me.

I always pack cheese, mixed nuts, and some of these Keto bars. Sometimes a few apple slices too, if I know I will burn them up quickly. http://www.ketobars.com

Thanks everyone! I wasn't able to get further than a 1/2 hour into a 3 hour hike as I was having a hard time getting a full and satisfying breath and then my heart started to beat funny. I downed an electrolyte drink before going but am thinking I may have needed to eat way more carbs before hand as it is a very rigorous hike. I'm also only 3 weeks into keto so I may need more time to get into ketosis. But all these suggestions are greatly appreciated for the next one!

Only 3 weeks in? Oh, that is most definitely going to be an issue. It can take up to a few months for your body to produce enough ketones for such activity, six weeks (I believe) is the time I've heard athletes need before getting back into hard training. Give it more time, I am 5 month in Keto and I too noticed a decline in performance for a several weeks too but that phase has since past. I was jogging before going Keto then I struggled for about 6 weeks before my energy fully came back. Now I am doing a 5k run on Saturday and don't anticipate any problems

I am headed to Sprindale and Sedona for a 9 day hiking vacation with my daughter and am trying to come up with ideas as well. I soaked and dehydrated a bunch of nuts and am taking some packages of enlightened fava beans. So far, that's all I got.
