I know that I probably shouldn't be that worried about going over my sugar because of fruits but I never realized just how much sugar was in a piece of fruit. I love fruits. Since joining MFP, I have went over my sugar everyday I think. I've only had breakfast so far today which included some grapes and I'm already down to just 4g of sugar left for the entire day. Seriously?

I was just wondering if there are fruits out there that are "low" in sugar?

Yes! Strawberries, Blueberries, Cantaloupes to name a few. Say no to Oranges, Bananas, Grapes and Watermelon those are typically higher in sugar.
  • Berries are lower in the glycemic index because of their high fiber content. That means they won't spike your blood sugar.

dont count fruit sugars in your daily goals
ie if you take in 50g sugar, but 40g are fruit and veg then its only really 10g

research the difference between fructose and glucose, and how your body processes, stores and gets rid of each

the sugar in fruits are called simplex carbs, fructose, and are used very fast ast fuel for energy....they are good, just as there are good fats
the starchy carbs from grains and breads have sugars called glucose and that's what you want to cut back on
need help let me know, glad to

There are fruits that are BETTER for you as far as sugar than others...I am diabetic so this was DEF a concern of mine since I LOVE fruit so much...I tend to try and stick with apples, strawberries, and melons....bananas are very high in sugar as are oranges...if you go to google and search there should be a list you can find at least thats where I got my info from...hope this helps!! :)

As everyone else so far has said, berries, even though they taste the sweetest IMO.

I know that strawberries and cherries have, on average, about a carb (sugar) per berry, and really, it's a bit less than that because they are fibrous fruits. Like someone else said, the fiber charts them lower on the GI scale anyway, so they're much easier on your system.

The benefits of fruit, like fiber and nutrients, outweigh the sugar. The sugar to avoid is processed sugar.

Thanks guys. I found a list online that I will use and try to stick to the fruits on the lower end of the spectrum. Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I like the idea of subtracting the sugar from fruits/veggies from my overall sugar goal for the day. If MFP did that automatically, that surely would be nice. :)
