Medical weight loss: what were your experiences?

I'm 27 years old, 245 lbs, and 5'3". A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with PCOS by my Obstetrician, and she gave me a referral to a weight loss specialist, because she said that losing weight should help regulate my cycle, and that I need to get down under 200 lbs before looking at my options for trying to get pregnant.

Since the appointment I've already started losing some weight on my own through lowering my caloric intake and getting more physical activity.

I haven't made the appointment with the weight loss specialist yet, and honestly, I'm nervous to. I'm afraid that they're going to put me on a very restrictive diet that won't be sustainable for me long-term. I feel like any time I've heard of people working with a Doctor on their weight loss, they've been on diets that require them to eat less than 1200 calories per day. But maybe that's just in extreme cases? I don't know.

Anyone have any experiences (either good or bad) with medical weight loss programs?

    My doctor is supervising my weight loss. She checks in on my diet. She is happy with MFP guidelines for my loss and it's working really well.

    If you have PCOS insulin resistance is an issue. You may be put on metformin for it, maybe not. With that diagnosis you will probably be going low carb/low sugar. You have challenges that some do not. If you feel you are given a program too low in calories, get a second opinion. You have to be your own advocate.

    I'm 24 and was 240 lbs (at 5'4") last February at my physical. My dr told me what I knew for years, that I needed to lose weight. I tried on my own, excercising and eatting healthy and tracking, until June 9 when I became frustrated that I only lost 7 lbs. I saw a nutritionist who suggested I try low carb. A year later I am still living a low carb lifestyle and down to 158 lbs! And my regular dr is on board with my low carb eatting. I had been overweight my entire life and "dieting" since middle school. It wasn't until low carb that I finally got control over my bad eatting habits and lost the weight. It's also a lifestyle that doesn't feel restrictive either. Feel free to pm me! :) Good luck with whatever you choose!
