Running After a Hernia

I've been off and on trying to start jogging. I've attempted the C25K program a couple of times and never stuck to it. Mostly to keep me motivated my lean wonderful husband said he'd start jogging with me, but he also wants to be healthy. He's never been one to exercise but is naturally very lean. He had a pretty bad inguinal hernia (fist size) a little over a year ago. He had to have surgery and had a mesh put in. The surgeon said their was a TON of scar tissue and that the area had probably been weakened ever since he was an infant and his testis descended which is why he didn't notice anything was wrong until is was very wrong. They actually had to make a bigger incision because the tear was bigger than originally anticipated...so yea..it was pretty bad. He's mentioned before when lifting heavy objects he feels the mesh...it doesn't hurt but he's aware it's there. Anyways, yesterday was the first time he jogged with me. He complained that his hernia area was sore while running, but this morning he says it is really sore. My question is there anyone who has had experience with this? Is it ok for him to keep running? Will it stop hurting eventually? Is there some kind of abdominal exercises he could do to help? I don't want him running with me if he's always going to be in pain or if there is a chance he could do some more damage.
Yes, I could have him go to the doctor and chat about this, but that would be like pulling nails. He doesn't go to the doctor unless he's dying. He was going to "sleep off" his hernia and only went in because he showed me and I told him to get his *kitten* in the car right that minute because we were going to the ER!

Even though it's hard to get him to go, he really needs to ask his doctor about this. Just because you have a hernia repaired, doesn't mean you can't get it again. If he's feeling that much pressure & pain, he needs to consult a professional for sure--he doesn't want to have to go back for another surgery.0

I had hernia surgery and had the mesh put in as well. The mesh along with the scar tissue caused some nerve pain for probably almost 2 years but...it was just pain. The doctor said that for me it was not going to cause additional problems by activity.0

Are you REALLY asking an Internet forum for medical advice? Make him go to a doctor! Only a medical professional can answer this question for HIS body.1

Are you REALLY going to hassle me for asking a question when I already stated it's tough to get this man in to see a doctor? Geez, I was asking if people had experienced it and kept running or if they had any exercises that helped them. I'm not asking for a diagnoses. If it hurt for longer than 24 hours after a run or if he couldn't stand up straight I obviously would have nagged him into the doctors office. Thanks for your concern. Move along.0 -

Thanks for your reply! From what I have researched nerve pain is common for a few years (up to five I read!)...so aslong as it fades within a day and he can walk upright I don't think I'll worry about it.0
