So I've been following a very careful diet of eating less calories for about a month and been losing a few pounds, I weigh myself every 3 days but some days my weight has gone up by a few pounds. Are my scales broken or am I doing something wrong? I am very very precise with calorie intake so I can't understand how my weight can sometimes go up after a few days. I weigh less than i did at the start but still having the pounds go up and down some weeks Is it normal?

It's very, very normal for your weight to fluctuate every day.

Yep, all of this. Very normal. If it's stressing you out, definitely switch to weighing once per week at the same time of day.1 -
The best time is once a week in the morning as soon as you get out of bed, naked1

I'd recommend to only weigh yourself once a week or once every other week. The human body can fluctuate within ranges of over ten pounds in just a few days due to water retention etc.1

Most likely culprits ( besides hormonal shifts in females ) are variations in sodium and carb intake that impact water retention, along with accuracy variations from not taking measurements in an identical condition.
400 mg of sodium ( about 1g table salt ) can cause retention of 4 cups of water = approx 2 lbs.
So, yeah, its 100% normal for your weight to vary by several lbs. over short time frames.Annahbananas wrote: »The best time is once a week in the morning as soon as you get out of bed, naked
... on your day off, having NOT eaten a high sodium/high carb meal for dinner the night before, and after using the commode.0 -
Think of weight, even maintaining weight, as the teeth of a saw. It goes up and down from day to day for a multitude of reasons, some related to gender. Tilt the saw toward the ground, and the teeth still go up and down for the same multitude of reasons. Over time, the tilted toward the ground, which is your calorie deficit at work, makes the future end of the saw lower than the present end of it. Yes, it's normal.2

Daily fluctuations are normal, as everyone has said. John Walker explains why in his free electronic book The Hacker's Diet: see the chapters on "The Rubber Bag" and "Signal and Noise."0
