Calories for a Nursing Mom

Hi I am trying to lose baby weight, and also breastfeeding my 3 month old son. I've been told that I need to consume an additional 500 calories to my daily diet. But MyFitnessPal will "yell" at me if I go over its recommended calorie intake, and I won't know if I'm actually making any progress. Suggestions? Ideas?

When I was nursing I set my MFP calorie goal to maintain and let my calorie deficit come from nursing. So that would be about 500 calories less, or 1lb a week.
When he started solids I moved to .5lb a week.
Or, if you search breastfeeding under the food section, there is a negative calorie entry for breastfeeing. It will give you extra calories when you select it.1 -
I entered breastfeeding as an exercise worth 500 cals. Never knew about the breastfeeding entry!0
