Virtual races

Do people actually do them? Or is it just a ploy to make money by sending you a medal? I'm not taking about the ones that are fundraisers, but the ones that pop up on my Facebook news feed from time to time.

I've run a couple virtuals when I was unable to make the physical race for some reason. I didn't like it as much. I don't think I'd do a standalone virtual though. I was running a "series" at the time, six 5ks over the course of the year. Mine weren't random off FB either though. The series was organized by a local personal training company.

It just doesn't appeal to me, it's not anything like a real race so I don't see the point. I like to collect running medals, but I think that medals from a virtual race just aren't the same.

    You get a medal for a 5k?

The random Facebook ones alwaya came across like you were just buying a medal. I've never done one. If I'm paying for it I want the race experience.

Depends on the 5k. I know of a few that do, but it happens every once and awhile.
