just got myself one of these step measuring devices and headed out for a good walk. Wondering what sort of average people get in a day.

Yea, that's a lot. You must have lots of time0 -
When I was on maternity leave I averaged 30,000 steps a day (about 14 miles). Now that I'm back at work I get about 20,000 steps. I also do the elliptical machine, but my tracker doesn't count that as steps.0

Yes 30,000 is a lot. Not many people do that without a lot of effort or an extremely active job. The recommended goal by someone is 10,000, but it is perfectly ok to do more. Happy walking!0
-
That is a real lot, lol. Whih tracker did you get? I have to make a conscious effort to get 10k steps.0
-
did you walk like 15 miles?1

Funnily I've walked 29500 today which is just over 18miles.Im pretty tired tonight. My daily target is 12000.Think I'll have a rest day tomorrow.Been non stop for a few weeks and my achilles has been sore for a month or so.Well done right enough.0

Wowsa. I'm happy when I reach my 10,000 goal. 30,000 is a whole lot of steps!0

Probably to other people. 30,000 steps is my average with my Fitbit. For me, I feel it's better to walk than sit.1

Yea, its alot. I have hit it before, but I only average 15-20k0

thanks all for your responses. I just tracked steps so no clue on the mikes so to see these numbers is pretty amazing.
device is a garmin 920 XT for those who were curious.

30,000 steps is amazing! I've only managed to hit that many a few times in 6ish months.
29,177 steps for me equals 22kms or 13 miles.0 -
I average between 18,000 to 25,000 steps a day and on Saturdays it's usually 25,000 plus. My highest every was 40,000 steps, I came close to that last week.0

30k is for wusses. 50k or don't even bother, IMO.0

If I'm at work, I'll hit about 27000. When I'm home or at school I hit about 17000.
30000 is awesome!0 -
30 000 is an awful lot for a daily average. I manage that if I go for a long walk and is about 17 km or 3-4 hours. I just finished my Hadrian's Wall path A well known long distance walking path and the longest one there got me to 48 500.
I do admit my pacer (app on phone) is not the best but not that far off if I calculate it (average distance per step and distance walked - latter GPS determined)0 -

I have found that 5 miles is 10000 steps give or take 5%
My gait may be different than yours, you may try mapping out a mile and see how many steps it takes you to walk it at your pace0 -

Well done doing the trail, I want to do that 1 myself. I live on the edge of the South Downs Way and walk about 200-250 per month. Not sure about steps per trip though, usually work out mine in miles with mapmywalk

I caclulated the accuracy twice though, just because I was curious on its accuracy. I am a bit of a nerd when it come to things like that.
Hadrian is worth it. Was wonderful! Just be aware of the parts with the crags. That was pretty hard for us dutchies.
South Downs Way has een recommended as a follow up as people said it was about as hard as Hadrian with quite a different view

30000 is a fantastic effort, just checked my tracker, it's 16:51 and I've done 16477, pretty much all from work this morning.0

I've done this once a few years ago for a walk around the world challenge. My 30000 steps was a whopping 13 miles. Well done OP!0

Hi all - I'm new here but I relate to this. I've been going pretty hard core and hitting 30k a day as well by device measure. I'm a computer guy so no, not work - I just have a lot of time (no wife or kids lol).
The big point is - ANY pedometer is wrong by quite a bit. I have a fit bit, iPhone and Apple Watch. The three pedometers usually roughly agree, but .... The GPS app does not, at all. The GPS showing your map routes is much more accurate - and all three pedometers were over the real deal. Actual steps and miles are almost always - to a tee - 2/3 what your pedometer says you did. 30k pedometer is really 20k, etc. and that is accurate across multiple vendors. Why? I am guessing bounce/shake of devices create misreading - like phone in pocket bounces off leg, wrist device counts scratching an itch while jogging an extra step. This is no fault of the vendors, no way to account for that really, just the way it is.
So - 30k is 20k - but still - good workout!!!!!
Add any GPS app to your phone for better readings, and don't add bursts as a workout - aka walk ten feet, stop, repeat - the same as continuos walking. Reduce those by about 3/4 to equate them (don't dismiss them, just be realistic about those miles as being 'cardio'). Btw - the 3/4 comes from rough heart rate acceleration v stagnant per hour (yes I googled that).
Cheers to 20k though !!!!!!!0 -
What device do you use? I'm looking for one but don't have a fortune to spend. I'm thinking a day at work would be that for me. As I'm on my feet all day. We shall just have to see. But yes that is rather alot.0

I get all happy (and tired) when I do 14k... cannot imagine to do 30k in a day, but it is great you did it!0

30K-33K steps = 14-17 mile day hiking for me.0
