Help! Still have weight to lose. Can I start lifting?

Should I stick to body weight and dumbbell squats and stuff while I still have about 15 lbs to lose and then start a recomp, or should I start now? I still need to eat at a deficit, so can I start a program while on one? I know muscle gains can't be made in a deficit so I'm confused what to do.

Start now to retain the muscle you do have while you lose0

I started heavy weight training the day I started taking weight loss seriously. I don't understand why you would purposely wait if it's something you're interested in? It helps ones physique greatly to lift in a deficit. Save the muscle and hey, if you're a beginner you might have some newbie gains/luck.2

Starting Strength is a good program. Have you had anyone go over form with you?0 -
you want to lift while cutting because you can still build strength on a calorie deficit0

No but I've watched videos, and have been doing body weight versions on my own and feel pretty confident as I've been practicing form. Hopefully I'll meet some more trained people at the gym for help as I go.0 -
Hi--I'm new to the forums, but I also have lifted through my entire weight loss 40 plus lbs so far. I love how it feels and having muscle tone. So my vote would be yes--do it!0

Must lift to body recomp... Be a smaller you or be a more lean you. Your choice. I prefer lifting!0

Yeah. And Mark Rippetoe has pretty good form videos that are a helpful start.0 -
Ditto to everything said. I have lost 108lbs (50 to go) and have done some form of lifting weights the entire time. The weight hasn't come off fast, but now I can start to see some muscle under there I'm doing SL 5x5 now, I like it. I watch a lot of videos and have met with my gym owner for form help.0
