@diethen, you can do this. Try and do it one day at a time. Remember that there is no failure short of not trying. My father lost 100 pounds when he was in his 70's. It saved his life. Age is a factor, but not a show stopper.

    You're very active, so good!
For starters, try logging all the foods you normally eat, and see how many calories you are eating.
Once you see where the calorie 'bombs' are in your day, you can gradually make modifications...

So much fun to be had with a user name such as @diethen. I'll try to avoid that. Since you're very new here, you are at the beginning of a journey, the path is mysterious and unknown, and you have much to learn. We will help. First thing you have to do is get skilled at measuring and logging your food. You'll need a kitchen scale, and that's cheap. Once you start measuring and logging your food, you will discover that you start realizing that you were eating so many calories to maintain an overweight body. We don't know what you're eating, but you will do yourself a lot of good if you set your diary to be open to public. When you ask for help, helpful people will be able to help you with knowledge. Knowledge really is power, and the magic happens in your head when you log your food.

@diethen Age ain't nothin but a number and you can lose weight. It just takes more effort as we get older. You can do whatever you set your mind to do! :)

Funny that I find your intro. I too am 54 (will be 55 next month) and starting the journey (again). I can usually do it a few weeks, sometimes a month or so, but something always happens and oops I lost the momentum again. This time I am adding protein shakes to my diet, I finally found one that does not taste like crap. I am never near my protein goal without adding some sort of extra protein to my diet, usually nuts, but they are high in fat and calories so I try not to get too carried away.
