I am new to running and ran my first race this morning. Just curious.

My personal Average 5K is between 28m and 31m. Depends on how much I've been training.0

How long is a piece of string?
Personally I don't race 5K, my focus is on the longer distances, but at 46 my best 5K was 22 minutes and in training sessions I'll normally hit the 5K point in about 26-28 minutes, depending on how far I'm going that session.1 -

Ooooh thanks!
I'm slower at half, but quicker at 10k... and hoping to be quicker at 5k next week!1 -
Look up the results from previous years for the race you are running. That will give you an idea of how fast the course is and what types of runners enter it.1

"How long is a piece of string?" This is good. What anybody/everybody else is doing is really not relevant. It is ALL about what you are doing and how you are improving. Truth be told, I'm checking my placement in my age and gender category as soon as it's posted, but the real yard stick is my last race and MY personal best.
The questions to ask are; What is my average time for the distance and what is my personal best;
can I match, or exceed either or both; and
am I feeling good doing so?1 -
My 5k time for non race (because I haven't run a 5k in forever) is around 24 minutes. I would think that at race pace it would be 22:30ish.0

Don't worry about comparing your times to others, especially if you're new to running. If I did that I'd have probably quit running years ago.......

I run about 5k every day and I usually average about 34 minutes. I'm 35 years old.0

Agree with @BrianSharpe don't compare yourself to others. I just compete with my own times. Let your first 5km set the pace for you. With each run you should find yourself getting stronger and faster. Just remember not to go to fast too soon, you want to avoid injury. If you find yourself stuck at a time for a long period sometimes you have to slow down to get faster.0

27:12 is my best 5K. My goal is to be under 24 minutes.0

my first 5km was 41 minutes - don't compare yourself to others, especially when you first start running...Compare your time to your next best time.....0

My best is 17:48 in HS. These days, I'm shooting for sub 19:30. The average runner at my races runs around 24:30 I'd say.
Don't worry about the avg time. Just run!0
