First of all, I think I speak for everyone when I say, "Thank you" for your and your families' sacrifices . Many of my family members were/are military, but right now none are deployed.
I began this discussion thread thinking maybe you would want to share experiences here in this thread specifically for military families & friends, because I know it is good to talk with others who understand your situation.
Use it if you like - it is in Motivation and Support.
Please visit the rest of us as well ! Good luck on your health journey, and may all your loved ones come home well and soon.

And....It will bug me that I misspelled "Families" in the title! :-) Can't edit them once they're entered ! My heart is in the right place...

brife,
You are such a sweet person, and yu are doing SO well with this program. I hope other military families and friends will post on this board. I read posts all the time here talking about military family members, and I hope you are all getting the support you need in your life. Does the military offer free or low-cost counseling for those who have loved ones serving actively? Not that I think anyone here needs it, I just wondered. I know in our area there are "Spouse" support groups.
I really don't have any experience with any close family being deployed, no one went to Desert Storm or Vietnam, some Korea Vets (my dad), many WWII Vets, but I know people whose families are affected by this present war.
I hope you are getting whatever you need.

Cheryl thank you so much. You are such a sweet person also. There isn't any low cost or free, counseling that i am aware of. I will need to look into that, not that I need it but I do know of a few that could find use of it. I know that if we shop at a certain store we can get discounts, w/e, it all helps. My whole family has taken part in many wars. my grandpa, uncles, aunts, cousins are currently in iraq. its tough.

Hi, Bailey!
Just me up late AGAIN. I would really like it if we could get a few more hours in a day. That would be so helpful.
All's well with me!
I wanted you to meet my workout partner, kitty "Budhi" (like "booty") He is a rescue kitty, and since I don't let my cats outside, I bought a pet stroller and Budhi goes on my walks with me. It forces me to push 25 pounds - that has to be a good thing. I load up my purse, cat, 3 water bottles, my music, a jacket, an umbrella (I'm in Seattle) - and off we go. He's been enjoying it. Me too.

Hi Cheryl!
I agree with you we need more hours in a day. I never seem to get everything done that I want. Well since I cant change that yet I guess I just got to deal.
I think that it is absolutely adorable that you let Budhi enjoy the walks with you. I had a rescue kitty once, well actually i have rescued 8 cats all together but only two from the shelter, the rest were strays. Unfortunately i had to move and i gave each kitty to a special home and i visit frequently.
Capone (i dont really know how to spell his name its like a god or something) he's an orange tabby, he is my laid back kitty. I will show you.
Chloe an Egyptian Mau that we rescued from a feral cat at my grandpas back yard, she is bad lol. She is a runner, up and down stairs constantly playing.
Lilly a seal point siamese, we rescued her from the shelter. she is my hunter, many times I have would come home and she would have a mouse on my pillow!!
Bear aTurkish Angora, he is fat and lazy. only drinks out of the sink lol. spoiled kitty.
Jewel a mutt lol just rescued her from a abusive home. I guess it would be theft if they cared. We had to bottle feed her.
Smokey a fat European Shorthair. We dress him in doll clothes and put him in the baby doll strollers and he loves it lol.
Huhbebe (means my love in arabic, have no idea how to spell it) a Ocicat. I was taking a walk and she was following me she is one of the only ones i still have, love her lots she is so tiny.
last but not least Revé (like Ra Vay) he is just an all around sweet cat. when i am working out he plays with my feet, and wakes me up bright and early for cuddles. not to mention he gets along with my two dogs Annie a mini pin and Sandy (a rescue) German shepard/ coyote.
i will post pictues in a little bit for you to see.0 -
hey, Brife!
How's the healthy eating going? I am having good days and bad...as is the case in life. I am not working right now, so some days I have to struggle to get out of my jammies!
Working out has given me some focus and I am meeting new people at the gym, so that's good!
I loved hearing about your kitties. I volunteer at a private animal shelter, and I would bring them all home, but I had to draw the line at three (Budhi, Raisin, and Homer)...space and $$$ the big considerations! I don't want to become the crazy cat lady.
Take care, keep me posted.

Hi I am a Marine wife and mommy of one sweet little girl! My husband has been in Afghanistan since April and wont return home until March or May 2010. I have been working really hard to shed my post baby weight while he is away and have already taken off 50 since he has been gone but I have a bit more to go. Now I am getting more proactive with my weightloss since I have hit a wall and that is why I joined this community. I have totally changed around my eating habits (frozen lean dinners every night) to fresh whole grain alternatives. I have to watch that I am not taking in too few calories every day because I still nurse my 9 month old! I am just happy to find other Military people on here0
-
wow, way to go on the 50 lbs down! That is awesome.
I am also a military wife, my husband is in the Army and is also deployed to Afghanistan. I have been wanting to drop a bunch of weight before R&R and unfortunately have let my emotional eating get away from me. I have probably lost 8 lbs since he has left and R&R is next monthNeedless to say I am really disappointed in myself...guess what, that doesn't help with the emotional eating. So I just started Slim in 6 this week. I am on day 3 and can definitely feel it. i'm going to see what I can do over the next month and hope Christmas doesn't screw me up too bad and then will hopefully be consistent with it until he comes home.

Just keep focused. While my hubby is gone I hang my skinny skirt on the fridge it helps me remember the the answers are not in there and that I have a goal in mind!! It may sound a little crazy and if you have frequent guests it may not work, in that case just a simple sign or post it note that says "Its not in here" is always good too!!! I am such an emotional eater. Guilty of sobbing over the Biggest Loser while stuffing my face (yeah not good hahah)0
-
That is funny about Biggest Loser. I am usually have a inappropriate snack at while watching it. The note is a good idea, thanks. I have a 7 and 3 year old so I don't know that I could get away with the skinny skirt on the fridge. My daughter would walk away with it.0
-
haha that is too funny about your daughter!! If mine could reach it she probably would have taken it away herself haha!0

wow, you guys, did you see that I started this thread in late 2007?? I'm wondering how you even found it? Glad you did, and I hope you connect with one another. I spent a lot of time on mfp in that first year, trying to stay busy instead of eating. It seemed to work.
I re-read my original posts and was sad to read about taking my sweet little Boo out for walks. I had to put him down in September 09. I miss him every day and am glad I have two other four legged children to keep me company.
I know there are many threads with "military" families. We care about you and appreciate all your family is going through.
Keep in touch! :flowerforyou: ~Cheryl0 -
This is such a sweet thread. My husband is currently in Iraq as a contractor, and he will be gone for about 18 months. He's been gone 2, so only 16 more left! We have a precious 2 year old Daddy's girl and she says everyday how much she misses him. The holidays have been so hard for us. I'm just trying to stay busy and hope that the time goes quickly!
Timmi, 50 lbs is a huge accomplishment! You're really on a roll!!0 -
there is an amazing book out put out by Zero to Three, called Over There. They make a mommy and daddy version...It starts off "My daddy is away and I miss him, He is not here right now he is there....I do the same things here that he does there....my daddy would like to be here with me. But he has very important work he must do there" and so on. It is cardboard great for the little ones and in the back there is a place to put a photo of daddy. I read it every night to my daughter and she kisses daddys picture and we tell him good night. www.zerotothree.org/military if you cant find it on there (202) 638-1144 that is the publishers number it is in DC,. They also released an amazing book called " I am here for you now" I highly recommend you check it out!
Hopey1994 your right staying busy is the best way to go about it, I have made great friends with my neighbors and other mothers and wives who are in my situation. No one really knows what your going through unless they have done it themselves. I am still living here in NC when the rest of my family is in PA because they look at me like I am crazy when I am down. They tend to be very inappropriate things as well like "just think he is going to miss your daughters first words and steps..." Like I dont already think about that. We are however wating until daddy comes home to celebrate Christmas there are so many things he is missing and this is something we can let him be here for. I have already warned my neighbors that I am going to put up lights in May hahah. It is beleived that Jesus' real birthday is in the spring anyhow.
Just hang in and hold tight, being apart really does make you appriciate eachother so much more and makes you realize how strong you are.0 -

Thanks so much for the book suggestion. I'm going to go check it out! sorry your family isn't very understanding. But if he comes home in May, that will be here before you know it! We have another 16 months until he's home for good. But I'll see him in March for 2 weeks. 1 day at a time, right? Merry Christmas (super early i suppose...5 months too early for you!)0 -
thanks so much!! your right one day at a time that is all we can do. The days start going faster and then weeks fly by. It is all bitter sweet especially with little ones they learn and grow so fast and on one side your praying for your time to fly by and on the other your wishing it would stand still. Each day he is there is one less that he has to be away!!0
