Sodium question and blood pressure.

This may be a dumber question but me and the wife disagree.

I have high blood pressure and today it was better then most days then the dummy came out in me I had tons of popcorn butter and white cheddar seasoning on it then 150 gram bag of BBQ chips.

I got off sofa maybe an hour later and took bp in the kitchen it was 175/105.

Now she said it was the big increase of salt so quickly but I said there is no way that got in my system that fast.

Could that be it or was my bp just a freak spike.

Thanks

Actually sodium always affects my blood pressure fairly quickly. I have low blood pressure and have occasionally had to drink salt water in order to bring it up quickly when it was too low.

Salt can affect your heart/kidneys short and long term. Short term, it's all about your body maintaining equilibrium. When you have more salt in your body, your body will retain more water (to keep the same concentration of electrolytes). Therefore, you will have a higher blood volume and this will add more pressure in your veins and arteries, accounting for the blood pressure increase. So yeah I think I remember learning in class that it can happen pretty quickly (gettin a phd in molecular bio but too physiology).
