In August 2015, I got my first depo pro era (birth control) shot. I took it until December 2015. I started seeing a big change in my weight, gaining 20 pounds in about a month. so I switched to Nexplanon, the subset all implant that is good for up to 3 years. I have noticed that I have gained even more weight, 50 pounds in 6 months. I'm not sure what to do, as I want to get the implant out but I'm not sure that's the culprit. I can't keep putting on weight. I'm only 16 years old. No matter how hard I try I can't get the weight off. help?

There's a decent chance that your BC is one of the culprits here. I'm a fellow Nexplanon user; I've had it in since Dec 2014 and have since gained 45-50 lbs. I've also had a myriad of other problems with my period & PMS that are causing me to have it removed halfway through its lifetime. Not to scare you - I'm just sharing my experience.

Since you've only had your implant in about half a year now, I would say go talk to your obgyn. There is, unfortunately, a period of time (6-12 months) in which your body needs to "get used to" the hormones; until then you can have symptoms like extra bleeding, etc.

However, while it's easy to point at your BC and say "It's your fault!" there can also be other factors involved. Funding/insurance permitting, I'd suggest you to talk to your Dr about having some bloodwork done. Testing hormone levels related to the thyroid may be helpful in figuring out why you're having extra difficulty losing, and even maintaining, your weight.

*I'm not a medical professional, take my advice with a grain of salt and go talk to your Dr
