My ankles hurt

Ok well not really hurt but they feel kind of like I really need to pop the joint, like an irritation.

I've recently started c25k, done it for three weeks, now and wonder if anyone else has had this problem when they run or jog? Is there anything I can do? Could it be my shoes? Will it pass? Am I just weak and a big baby? lol

Not sure, you should call your GP and ask them. Anything you can do? Rest It could be your shoes, do you need to replace them. They do get old. Will it pass? with rest, I'm sure. I had a knee issue but kept running and it got worse until I could not run anymore. I finally went to the doctor, got it drained and a cortisone shot and was told to rest. I got better with rest. You are not weak and you are not a big baby. Running is hard but it does get easier with time. Hang in there, running is fun!!

Could it be the shoes? How old are they?

I got them a year ago but I rarely wore them so they're not worn at all piratically brand new.

Hi, you could be overdoing it. Have a weeks rest and do something else if you can, cycling, swimming, skating, anything that moves the ankle but doesn't put too much stress on it. Then set yourself back a week or 2 on the training schedule rather than start where you left off. Make sure you are warming up adequately before you start running. For instance I walk 10 mins down my road before i start running to make sure my joints are properly warmed up, near the end of the road do some (i've forgotten the word!) 'moving' stretches: straight leg kicks, heel to bum, knee to chest, arm swings, torso twists, hips rotations (like using a hula hoop) and doing that with my knees as well and ankle rolls. Then i start running. I also do a good 20 mins or more of yoga when i'm finished running. If you're not sure what you need to stretch or how to do anything youtube runner's yoga, or any similar phrase and it should bring up some really good vids to try, and there's usually a good choice of timings from 5mins to a full hour to pick from. Once you know what works for you you can just do those moves/stretches.

You may also want to consider going to a chiropracter to make sure you're ankles aren't being affected by an issue elsewhere (i have a bad knee stemming from a bad back, and i also have super tight calves). A chiro will find the issue and give you exercises to do to combat/improve your ankle strength/mobility.

Shoe wise, it's possible your trainers aren't any use for you for running. Did you check what sort of feet you have, high arch or fallen arch, anything inbetween, if you're trainers aren't right for your feet they may be causing issues. google: 'runner's world take the wet test'
Trainers don't have to be expensive, as long as they support you where they are supposed to. you can spend£30 and get a good pair of trainers.

I hope that helps. good luck.

Thanks, I'll take a few days and do other things for workout on the days I had planed c25k and then see how they feel after starting back up. Then if it happens again talk to my GP, I have an appointment coming up anyway.

Another possibility is lack of ankle flexibility.

I don't have an answer but a question. Are your ankles swollen? How about where your achille tendons is? Sometimes you can over work the ligaments.

I have had the same problem on and off for several years. The best solutions I've found are 1) soaking feet and ankles in warm water and a cup of Epsom salts (I use a large, deep dish pan from Walmart) for about 20 minutes before bed. And 2) the yoga pose where you lay on the floor on your back. Put your legs on the wall and scoot your butt as close to the wall as possible so your legs are as vertical as you can get them. I slowly rotate one foot at a time to loosen the ankle joint - that seems more effective than rotating the ankle while sitting up, and I get a lot of relief that way.

    A couple of thoughts:

    1. Are you stretching before and after your running sessions? I starting running and hurt myself the first time around, but the second time I started I made sure to stretch. Before and after. Made all the difference.
    2. Are you taking days off between running sessions? You can overtrain, you need to rest. Do not run on back to back days. You can lift weights or bike ride or swim or crochet or whatever, but don't run.
    3. Do you have the right running shoes? I did C25K earlier this year, and about 4 weeks in I rewarded myself with a trip to the running store to get fitted for proper running shoes. Turns out I have a slight pronation and needed good shoes. They were no more expensive than any other cross-trainer/running shoe at the sporting goods store. I actually got mine 25% off (last years model).
    4. Are you over-striding? Smaller, quicker steps are better than long, heavy strides. Puts a lot of pressure on your joints, too. Shorten up for better form and less stress.

Just a few ideas. I've been there, my issue was my knee and my IT bands. Stretching was my biggest cure for my ailments.

Don't give up, you just have to learn how to manage what works (and what doesn't) for you. Running is awesome, you'll love it!

    Good luck!

    1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. Probably Not
    4. No

I don't even know where I could go around where I live to get fitted for shoes. I live in the middle of nowhere.
