MFP calories burned calculations

I have been doing the Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds video for my exercise. I just started the 3 mile, and it takes 45 minutes to complete. This equates to about 4 mph. When i enter this into the exercise page here on the website, it says I burned 458 calories. Is this really accurate? The 3 mile kicked my butt, and included side steps, knee lifts, kicks, kick backs and weighted balls for the upper body. MFP adds the calories it says I burned, but I want to make sure it is accurate, because I eat back the calories I burn and if it is not accurate, then I am actually going OVER my caloric intake for the day.

Thanks!

From my experience MFP always over estimates the cal burn, so beware. If you are going to do a lot of walking it may be an idea to invest in an HRM (with a chest strap)...... then you know for sure.

agreed, all the figures were way out when I compared to a HRM, best thing I ever did, apart from losing weight

yeah - invest in a good heart rate monitor WITH a chest strap (do not bother with the touch sensor style watches) I have a polar FT4 , it cost around $80 and is well worth every penny!

if your local sporting goods store doesn't carry them, then amazon does I believe.

MFP actually underestimated for me, but that makes sense cause they use averages.

Best of Luck and get a HRM!
  • I did the Leslie Sansone Walk Strong 30 minute video a couple of days ago. My HRM read 233. I am 5'1, 108 lbs.

I too invested into a HR Monitor. MFP calories were somewhat lower than my HR Monitor's Output, and somewhat higher on other workouts.

The HR Monitor factors in my: Resting Heart Rate, Weight, Height, Activity Level, and Effort. You can repeat the same workout with a higer or lower impact, so your output may pretty well vary....

    Good Luck!

I checked into a HRM, but have read horrible reviews on the cheaper ones. Will need to save up for a semi-decent one.

The HRM will give you what you need. I have a Polar FT4 and it really does take the guess work out of everything.

To be honest, this is why I will eat only half my calories burned for the day.

I find they are sometimes higher and sometimes right on.
