Anybody ever get heckled while running or biking?

Happened to me today when I was out on my bike for a long ride. It's really frustrating that people have to be such a-holes. Sounded like a carload of teens. I shouldn't have let it bother me but it makes me feel like crap that people have to be that way especially when I'm trying to do something good for me.

A while ago, I was walking to class and some guy in a car started barking at me. When I ignored him and turned a corner, he turned his car around and started following me and shouted "Hey b!tch, why are you walking away from me?" Well, let's see here. YOU *kitten* BARKED AT ME. Thankfully, once I turned he wasn't able to follow me in his car anymore so it ended there.

Otherwise, I haven't had any other experiences like that. I run outside quite often and I walk to class nearly every day but this was a one time thing (at least in my area. NYC is a very different story  )

A man that used to be mayor of a major city almost got run over by teens in a car while he was jogging. He got the license plate and reported it, The police were at the house of one of the teens that same day. I guess they didn't know he was the mayor. I think at the time he was the mayor but I can't remember.

Someone honked at me the other day. Scared me so hard. I nearly fell off my bike.

Yeah when I run I get people beeping at me occasionally as they drive past...which makes me feel uncomfortable but they're gone quickly.

When I ride my bike they're usually more angry than heckling, which can be scary.

It happens occasionally. It's annoying. It ultimately doesn't matter because I will reap the benefits of my efforts and that means much more than any heckling ever could. Things are only as important as you want them to be. Ignore them and keep on doing your thing!

Just the other day, someone threw something out of their window and hit me while I was cycling. I think he was mad because he had to wait a few seconds longer at an intersection because I had the right of way. As I passed, I could just see the look on his face, then when I heard him turn behind me, I thought he might yell something, but instead something semi=solid bounced off my left shoulder.

Yeah I get honked and yelled at when I'm running. It's always men, usually a couple of them in car. I completely ignore it, don't give them any reaction. It's the same as being cat called - it's a reality I've been dealing with for 15+ year. I hate it and it's gross behaviour but it is what it is.

It was 1987 .... Never forgot it though ... It did kinda suck the joy out of riding a bike for me, even to this day.

    Really??

I've been yelled at, honked at, or whatever (as I mentioned above) probably about once a month for the last 26 years.

They all blend into the unimportant, and I can only remember a small handful of the more dangerous encounters. But I don't let those encounters ruin something I love.

Apparently our public trails are full of elitist jerks. Seriously. They laugh at my bike. Yeah, i know it sucks, but it gets me from A to B and I won't be getting a better one til it falls apart. They also have no riding etiquette. Buttholes just whip around you with no warning. One almost plowed into an older lady out walking her dog today. So rude.

Yes, and I hate it. People who drive by and shout out the window when I'm running.
I don't feel physically threatened but it's unnerving and it's just so stupid.

This is why I never run outside. I am afraid people will bother me haha.

Only a few times while I've been out running, always by people in cars or lorries, either honking or shouting. Don't let it bother you, they're either sad men or people showing off to others in the car. Plus, they're gone in a few seconds.

The only time I tend to say, or do anything to said riders/runners (other than give them as much room as possible) is when they are being total *kitten*, riding in the center of the lane (making it impossible to safely pass them on two-lane roads).

ETA: Don't do this. It makes people angry. Angry people are prone to doing stupid things. They are in something that weighs 20x what you and your bike do. That, plus angry and stupid, could equal runner/rider dead.

Ugh. Teenagers. Irritating, but mostly harmless. Best is to just ignore them. When I was a teenager on the other hand...I was constantly harassed by men in their cars when I would go for a run. Now they were scary. One even got out of his car all wild eyed and scary and moved towards me like he was going to grab me, until another car came along and he got back in his car and took off. Another pulled over and seemed to be harmlessly asking for directions, until I realized he was...uh...playing his fiddle. (Yeah...kind of stopped running after that one.)

I do feel ya about those dang teenagers though, it happens to me too on occasion. It smarts a little, but they are teenagers, they don't even care or think anything about you, they just do it to see which one of them can make the most noise.

I get it occasionally when Nordic walking...an unusual activity around here...either kids @ school I go past yelling & laughing (she thinks she's frigging skiing, har har, har....etc), some car horn honking, occasional car slow down. Once lady hung out car window & took photo, lol, so I might even be a meme out in cyberspace! Is it annoying? Yep. Do I let it stop me? No way!

Oddly enough, I never get heckled when riding on the road. We have a great bike path here, and occasionally I've been heckled by the spandex clad racing bikers (Who actually aren't supposed to be doing time trials on the path anyway...it's for recreational riding, not speed riding). It's my pet peeve when cyclists heckle other cyclists.

That said....if anyone wants to be friends with an old, slow cyclist, I'd welcome a request! :)

When I first started losing weight, I'd go run at the track by my house. I was still probably 40lbs overweight, running slow, and I have a really weird jogging motion, so I would get made fun of by the kids/preteens down there. Some of them would run behind me trying to mimic my awkward running style. One day a group of them had balls that they would try and hit me with as I ran by. Every time they missed, I would just pick up the ball and throw it back to them.

Yup, occasionally. Don't curr. It happens no matter my physique.

Yes, I was called Fat-Boy back in 2012 while running. I went on to lose 100 pounds through running. But even still, I still get heckled by teens every once in a while.
