My fitness pal says I should eat 1
1440 calories a day. Isn't that a lot of calories to lose 1lb a week. I'm 5ft tall and am 74 years old. That's a lot of food

How much do you weigh?
1440 really isn't that much. I lose on 2000+ a day, but I also have over a hundred pounds to lose.0 -
What did you put your activity level at? 1440 is probably too high to lose 1 lb/week with your stats.0

Maybe. I'm 5'6" and eating 1450 to lose half a pound a week. But how much you weigh now matters, too. The heavier you are, the more it takes to sustain that. You could try eating at 1440 for a couple of weeks and see how it goes. Or, you could try eating as normal and log that (but be honest with yourself, weigh your foods and don't fudge) and see how many calories you are eating now.0

Also 1440 calories is not a lot of food.0

It depends on what you weigh right now. The more we weigh, the more calories our bodies need. I took a guess and for you to lose 1 lb per week with 1440 daily calories, you'd have to be 220 lbs and lightly active. You can click on the link below to see and adjust your activity level and weight in the calculator. Keep in mind that the faster we lose weight, the easier and faster it comes back on if/when we fall off the wagon. Taking a slow approach, say 0.5 lbs per week will probably achieve better results. I'd recommend checking with your doctor to see what they say and suggest that maybe the more important thing might be to lift some weights. This will help your bones and your calories at the same time and has also been shown to improve brain function (memory).

I don't think it is that a lot of food. Moreover, it's certainly not enough for you to gain any weight so my suggestion is to use 1440 as your goal for four weeks. At that point, look at your progress. Are you losing weight too slowly? Cut your calories slightly. Losing at a good pace? Keep them as they are. As all but the youngest of folks will admit, four weeks out of a lifetime isn't that much time. Carefully counting your calories during those week and trusting in the goal given to you is going to put you on the right path.
Best of luck to you.1
