How do you "splurge" on vacation?

I'm going on vacation for 3 days tomorrow! Where I'm going, it's all "comfort" food, of course, with some healthy options too. We eat once at a dinner buffet and twice at the breakfast buffet. I want to know how to splurge on my vacation, or at least be reassured it's OKAY to splurge on vacation, and how to get back on track when I return. Any suggestions, personal experiences, or reassurances?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Just eat whatever you want. Stop eating when you're full. Have a great time! Don't stress about it. When you get back, jump right back into your routine.0

Be selective... I was told as a kid that your eyes are bigger than your stomach, so start your buffets eating some good stuff -especially the breakfast buffet should have lots of fruit / yogurt options and scrambled eggs. try eating that before you head to the biscuits/gravy & bacon selections. You will probably be full after eating some "good" options. Also, it really helps to have a big glass of cold water before you start eating. Take your time when you eat... your fullness sensitivity will kick in 15-20 min. after you start a meal, so go slow and get recognize when you are full - let them take your plate away even if you have food remaining. Always good to leave a few bites or more on the plate if you are full
Have fun. try some new foods out that you normally wouldn't eat and enjoy.0 -
I just got back from my honeymoon so the last two weeks were pretty much all terrible eating/drinking between the rehearsal dinner, wedding and honeymoon. Surprisingly, this morning I weighed in UNDER my last MFP recorded weight, which means I didn't gain :-) Here's my theory behind how I managed to not gain although honestly I really don't know...
1. Over the last 8 months I've built up a lot of muscle. Muscle burns fat. Therefore my splurging didn't affect me quite as much as it would have prior to MFP when I had very little muscle.
2. On our honeymoon we walked EVERYWHERE. I'd estimate we walked at least 5-6 miles a day if not more.
3. Whether I consciously did it or not, I think I made SOME healthier choices. And I also don't think I'm capable of eating like I used to prior to MFP. When your body tells you to stop, just stop. It's hard but you'll feel better after the meal.
4. I didn't drink as much alcohol as I would have before because I'm a light weight now ;-)
I'm pretty much shocked I didn't gain and very glad that I didn't limit myself or count any calories during the last two weeks. I had an amazing time and when it comes down to it, a short vacation is not going to ruin all of the hard work you've put in. Just enjoy yourself and know that you need to get right back at it when you get back. I was actually CRAVING a Jillian Michael's workout by the time I got home. And now I'm sore :-)0 -
I agree, just eat what you wish and don't feel bad abouth it... keep portion size in mind...enjoy what you are eating because at this point, it should be foreign to your body so it will be a shock to your body... you know you will get back on track b/c you know you already are on the right track once vacation is over.... go back to your normal routine for eating and working out...
While on vacation.. don't sweat the stuff you can't control, just try to pick the best "unhealthy" option and enjoy.
I've already eaten several items while on vation that I haven't eaten in months... pizza, ice cream cone. Chocolate cake...
I just can't wait to hit the gym to get back to my rountine.
Enjoy is what I say, you won't have fun if you stress about food!

I just got back from my own 4 day vacation. I say don't worry about counting the calories. Where I went there was no internet, not even cell phone service, so there was no way to log on to MFP. So I just let myself eat some things I normally wouldn't and had a good time. A word of warning... By the end of the first day my stomach was very upset with me for some of whatI had fed it. After eating so healthy for so long now, my body was sort of "detoxed" and when I put the garbage in, it kicked it back out! So after that I took it a lot more easy, watched my portions and didn't overdo it. Then I jumped right back on MFP as soon as i was home. Have fun on your trip!0

Thanks guys! I think I took a little bit of all of your suggestions. I got my exercise in! I was able to walk each morning on the walking trail and walked a lot all day shopping and what not. For food, I was able to control myself at the buffets - fruit first, then one special plate at the breakfast buffet. Salad first, then one special plate at the dinner buffet with a sugar free dessert. I got on the scale, and I didn't gain any weight! I think I lost some! And like a lot of you said, my body wouldn't be used to those foods, and believe me, it wasn't. When I tried to eat a piece of fried shrimp, I was totally turned off. It didn't taste as good as it would to the old, careless eater version of me... lol.Over all, it was a great vacation all because of some great support from friends on MFP! Now it's back to logging.0
