Im trying very hard to stay within my targets but i often either go over on sugar or fat, if you have to go over which is the better option?

This is kind of hard because not all sugar and fat are the same. Say you are going over sugar because you ate a bunch of fruit that day. That sugar from the fruit is processed differently then say you had a protein bar and it had a bunch of sugar in it to make it taste good. Same with fat, you need some fat but if you have a cheeseburger and fries most likely that's going to be fat you don't need. Most times though the sugar you are eating is probably going to be processed and it's usually pretty safe to not go over on sugar.
  • as above, going over on natural sugars (fruit, veg, milk, etc.) is better than being over on added sugars (table sugar, biscuits etc.), and going over on healthy fats (unsaturated etc.) (avocados, fish, etc.) is better than going over on unhealthy fats (high saturated fat content etc.) (cheese, processed foods etc.)

Thanks for that, all very true. Ive only been using MFP for 6 days and still trying to eat healthier and balance my nutrition. I guess the main thing is to make better choices and see how i go. Its saturated fat im struggling with in all honesty but you switch to certain lower fat versions and i seem to click up my sugar in take. Whilst some of my sugar is from fruit, i confess the bulk of it isnt. I guess its all about re education when it comes to food and thinking before you leap so to speak. Thanks for taking time to respond

Going over on either or even does not matter at all if you are eating the right amount of calories and have a balanced, varied diet.

Thanks for this. Im staying well within my calories and am trying to bring my healthy and varied choices. I guess the trick is to use the nutritional info as a guideline but not to stress out as i have been. Use it to make more informed choices

Fat. I am prediabetic so eating higher sugar and carb foods is bad for my health. Extra fat othe other hand, is healthful for me.

And of course, I try not to go over my caloric goal too often.

Fat. What good is sugar without fat anyway?

I rather go over on protein, fiber and starches.. but if I had to chose, I rather go over on sugar because I love fruit and ice cream.

Just remember, diets are about total context. Look at the foods you are going over and more importantly ask if they are causing you to exceed your calorie goals. If they are from wholesome sources, I wouldn't stress, especially if you are meeting your caloric goals.

I'm more likely to go over on fat...because I really like cheese...but really, it's all pretty irrelevant if overall you have a pretty balanced diet that consists of a variety of foods and whatnot. I don't really sweat that small stuff...overall calories are what matter most. I try to get in good nutrition every day...plenty of veg and some fruit, whole grain, legumes, lean sourced protein, and good fats...getting into the minutia of being bang on your macros is unnecessary.

If I was going to go over on fat, it would be for cheese. I can literally eat a whole brick of that.. And yes, I have done it.
