Confused by random weight gain?

Hello!

I'm a bit of a 'lurker' on myfitnesspal - so bear with me! ;-)

About two months ago, I suddenly put on about 4lb. Nothing major, I didn't stress, and presumed it would come off soon, as it went on so quickly.

However, two months later, it still refuses to budge. I'm fairly confident it's not what I'm eating (I use myfitnesspal for reference at times to check I'm within the right range) - my diet is mainly lots of green veg, some fruit, smaller portions of 'brown' carbs, occasional soy (tofu, tempeh etc.) and then occasional treats. However, my sugar intake is pretty low in general. I am also pretty active.

Some people have said it's pre-menopause (I'm mid-thirties) and it happens naturally. And that's fine, I don't mind at all if that's the case - but is it normal for the weight to literally go on overnight, then never come off? It's a strange way for it to happen!

If that's my new 'normal' weight then I can take it on the chin - has anyone else had similar happen to them?

- Also, I suspect people might suggest weighing food to check I'm definitely eating within the calorie range - just to clarify, I've done this at regular intervals (e.g. once every two weeks or so) just to check I'm judging portions correctly still - and I'm pretty confident that I'm eating within range. I'm certainly not snacking without realising or anything like that - I don't really snack much during the day.

I'm reluctant to get into weighing every day, as in the past I've got a bit obsessed with weight-loss, and I don't want to go down that road again. It's just a personal thing - you know how it is!

Many thanks ladies.

Are your scales broken? If all your readings are on the same set that could be the case.

Yes, I'd suspect a fault with the scales, personally.

Are you trying to lose weight, or are you inmaintenance

They're digital scales - do digital scales do that? My husband weighs the same, so I'm not sure it's that (tempting though it would be to blame the scales!). I was happy with my weight before - is that what being 'in maintenance' is? TMI but my chest seems to have got bigger (and defo more painful) - is this a sign of something hormonal at work?

PS - I'm definitely not pregnant, in case anyone's wondering... :D

Digital scales can do that and they could still be accurate for your husband but not you (if your weights are quite different). They could also be non-linear in the range that you are weighing but not your husband.

But, I think the simplest explanation is likely to be the correct one and this would been to be the hormonal changes causing a swelling & fluid retention. I would't worry about this (I know from family members that this is a common effect of pre-menopause) but it would be prudent to discuss with your GP so that they can confirm the cause.

P.S. If the scales are showing a gain, but your trousers are not tighter about the waist and hips and visibly you seem the same we can probably rule out fat gain and this adds weight (no pun intended) to the pre-meno-bigger-chest argument.

The trousers are perhaps a little big more snug (though I get that quite often when the weather gets warmer) but nothing too major. I certainly don't feel any bigger (apart from the bra-size :D ) They're strange old things, aren't they... our bodies! Has anyone ever experienced anything similar?
