And he apparently suffered a beating in the process, bursting several blood vessels in his head during the lift.
Still, he beat the old record by 70 lbs.

Makes me wish I'd had the camera out that time I did the same thing.

Yup! I saw another video that had a close up view and you could see the look on his face while he was turning his head side to side there at the end. It was a "yeah, that's right punks" look and it was totally awesome.

Yeah, I can't deal with the bursting vessels thing. I'm generally not squeamish but....nope!

I'm not sure I know what to think about a world record that had such immediate repercussions in haemmorhaging

True. While deadlifting (done right) is safe, any kind of world record attempt in a physically taxing activity is going to be dangerous.
He actually said in an interview afterward that he doesn't consider it a healthy thing to do (speaking of pushing the limits as far as he is).

Great -- he goes and raises the bar just as I was getting close to matching it. Showoff. :):):)

This overshadowed two other people who went beyond the old WR. Benni Magnusson and Jerry Pritchett both pulled 465/1023. Hall did as well, but he kept going for one more.

Snap! I didn't see that! Kudos to them!

Notice how gentle Benni puts 465 down...

That's pretty cool, but I don't want to get bulky.

I'll settle for deadlifting 3x bodyweight (500 lbs at <170). Gimme a year or two.
