Are you good with computers? I'd appreciate your help! :)

I've got an HP Pavillion Entertainment PC laptop running Windows 7. The computer is about 1.5 years old, and I've taken really good care of it. It doesn't have any viruses right now. Perfectly normal computer.

Except that for the last month or so, it's been randomly shutting off when I unplug it from the charger. It always does it at right around 45%. The computer used to shut off at 9%, after giving me a warning at 12%. Now, I receive no warning, and it randomly shuts off.

I also lose some settings- like all my accounts that keep my email address in the first line, everything is suddenly gone and I have to enter it again (though I'm not sure if that's normal with a sudden shut off... like I've said, this has only been happening in the past month.

I also checked my power settings to see when it's supposed to shut off. They are exactly the same as before- warn me at 12% and shut off at 9%. Nothing has changed, but just to be safe, I even clicked the "restore default settings". The problem persists.
It's also not the problem of the computer getting too hot- the computer is barely warm (usually I'm just playing music when I've got it unplugged).

Do you have any ideas of what it could be? I appreciate any help! Thanks. :)

Best bet, either your battery is shot, or something is buggered in the switch to battery power from charger.

I would lean towards the battery being shot. Pretty common, and it won't give an accurate charge reading.

Your battery might be getting old. The batteries aren't designed to last forever. Mine is only 2 years old and doesn't keep a charge at all. You can usually find replacements on ebay for pretty cheap, just make sure they are OEM and not some strange off brand.

Does the system shut down safely or does the power just flat out turn off? Hard to tell if the battery is bad or if the system's not reporting the correct health of the battery. Hmm, I'd give a check anyway just in case. Do you have HP Support Assistant on there? I believe it has a Battery Check tool. If not, check this link:

Thanks guys. I'll run the battery check with HP Support Assistant, and then if all else fails, I'll probably take it in for a new battery.
    I appreciate everybody's help! :)

My boyfriend is a PC tech and sees this problem all the time. It's a bad battery. All you need is a replacement.
  • The majority of Pavillion batteries have been recalled. I'd check the HP website with your model/batch number and you might be able to get a replacement for free as opposed to spending $125+ on a new one.
