True, abs can't be seen if they're hiding behind a layer of belly fat. That being said, the more developed the ab muscles, the easier they are to see. That comes from training, genetics, or a combination of both.2

Revealed in the kitchen would be more accurate. Abs are still muscles and muscles are built through resistance training.9

Not made no, revealed - maybe.3

I've always hated that statement. You need to bith eat right and train hard, the difficulty level of each is greatly influenced by genetics.2

Build abs in the gym, reveal in the kitchen.
Do abs in the gym, 2-3 times a week. Diet wise, you bulk if you are skinny and/or want to build muscle. Abs exercises on a bulk will build the muscles. Cut if you are heavy and/or want to reduce body fat % (never go above 15% for if you are in it for aesthetic purposes). Abs exercises on a cut will keep the muscles while losing fat (and possibly build it slower if you are a novice).
For a guy, it takes about 8% to 10% for nice defined abs depending on how much muscle you have, genetics, where your body stores fat last, etc.1 -
Revealed at lower body fat but they have to be there to begin with so 80: 20 rule0

Thanks for all the fantastic responses!
I agree revealed is such a better choice of word.0 -

There is a 0% chance you've ever had 5% BF and/or not had abs at 5%.1
