True, abs can't be seen if they're hiding behind a layer of belly fat. That being said, the more developed the ab muscles, the easier they are to see. That comes from training, genetics, or a combination of both.

I've always hated that statement. You need to bith eat right and train hard, the difficulty level of each is greatly influenced by genetics.

Even at 5% BF in high school, I don't have a six pack.

Build abs in the gym, reveal in the kitchen.

Do abs in the gym, 2-3 times a week. Diet wise, you bulk if you are skinny and/or want to build muscle. Abs exercises on a bulk will build the muscles. Cut if you are heavy and/or want to reduce body fat % (never go above 15% for if you are in it for aesthetic purposes). Abs exercises on a cut will keep the muscles while losing fat (and possibly build it slower if you are a novice).

For a guy, it takes about 8% to 10% for nice defined abs depending on how much muscle you have, genetics, where your body stores fat last, etc.

There is a 0% chance you've ever had 5% BF and/or not had abs at 5%.
